What are Nasolabial Folds?
Nasolabial folds, sometimes referred to as smile lines, are the lines that extend from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth. While these lines are a normal part of facial anatomy, they may become more pronounced with age due to a combination of fat loss, changes in bone structure, and reduced skin elasticity.
Listen as Senior Nurse Stephanie shares her insight into facial ageing and the popular massaging trend currently circulating on social media. What really happens beneath the surface of facial volume loss?
What Causes Nasolabial Folds?
Several key changes occur in the face as we age:
-
Fat Loss (Lipoatrophy): From around age 30, we lose approximately 1% of facial fat per year. By the time many individuals reach their 50s, facial fat volume can be significantly reduced, leading to a more hollowed or flattened appearance.
-
Bone Resorption: Starting around age 35, we also begin to lose bone density, including in the skull and midface. This gradual change reduces support beneath the skin and contributes to the deepening of folds.
-
Collagen and Elastin Decline: Collagen and elastin production slows after age 35, reducing the skin’s ability to maintain firmness and bounce. As a result, the skin may appear thinner and more lax over time.
-
Ligament Laxity: The ligaments that anchor the cheek tissues can lose tension, causing the underlying muscles and soft tissues to descend. This contributes to the overall descent and deepening of folds in the midface.
These combined effects result in deflation (loss of volume) and descent (sagging of tissue), which massage or topical treatments alone are unlikely to correct.
Can You Prevent Nasolabial Folds?
While the natural ageing process cannot be stopped, certain measures may help maintain facial structure and skin quality:
-
Use of SPF and Skincare Products: Protecting the skin from UV damage and maintaining hydration may support skin health over time.
-
Healthy Lifestyle Choices: A balanced diet, regular exercise, avoiding smoking, and staying hydrated can all support skin and bone health.
-
Early Non-Surgical Interventions: Some individuals consider early treatment options that address skin laxity and volume loss in a preventative manner.
Treatment Options for Nasolabial Folds
Several non-surgical treatments are available that aim to address the underlying causes of nasolabial folds:
-
Dermal Fillers: May be used to increase volume in the midface or directly in the fold area, depending on individual anatomy.
-
Biostimulator Injections: Designed to stimulate collagen production over time.
-
Skin Tightening Treatments: Devices such as radiofrequency or ultrasound-based technologies may be used to support skin structure and firmness.
It’s important to note that treatment suitability depends on individual needs, anatomy, and preferences. A consultation with a qualified medical practitioner is recommended to explore appropriate options.
