The topical question I get asked a lot at the moment is about Rejuran® skin boosters; what we actually do with it, and how it’s used. So let’s get into it.
Rejuran® is an interesting product. It’s been around for about two to three years now, and it comes from Korea. It’s derived from wild salmon, and it’s a polynucleotide, so it works by stimulating collagen. Essentially, it’s a biostimulator. That means it’s not filling or relaxing anything, it’s prompting your own skin to do the work.
What Is Rejuran® Skin Booster?
Rejuran® skin booster is a polynucleotide injectable that stimulates your skin’s own collagen production rather than adding volume or smoothing muscle movement. It works by activating fibroblasts, the cells responsible for building the scaffolding of your skin, so the results build gradually as your own tissue responds.
It can be used all over the face, and it actually comes in a few different forms. There’s Rejuran® i, which is for around the eye area, Rejuran® Classic for general skin, and Rejuran® Scar for scar tissue. Different products, but the same polynucleotide, and the same job: stimulating that scaffolding underneath the skin.
How Does Rejuran® Work to Stimulate Collagen?
Rejuran® works by placing polynucleotides just under the skin, where they activate fibroblasts and encourage the skin to rebuild its own collagen structure over a series of treatments. It’s not an instant fix. It’s more of a slow-burn improvement in skin quality as those fibroblasts get to work.
The placement itself is quite controlled. Rejuran® is injected with a tiny needle, so you genuinely cannot go any deeper than what that needle allows, it’s very controlled in the depth. It sits just intradermal, which is part of why it can be a preferred option for tricky areas like around the eyes.
Who Is Rejuran® Suitable For?
Rejuran® suits people who want to improve overall skin quality, fade dark circles, or address scar tissue, rather than those chasing volume or a dramatic change. If you’re looking at the quality of your skin and just want to give it a bit of a sharpen up, it’s a nice option for general rejuvenation.
It’s also particularly useful around the periorbital rim, so around the eye. The eye and tear trough area are some of the most challenging parts of the face to treat, and that’s down to the anatomy. Things can go wrong there with some other treatments that have been used in the past. Over many years of treating this area, and really understanding the anatomy in detail, we’ve become a lot more cautious about how we approach the orbital rim. Rejuran is a product that causes fewer problems in that zone, while still giving you the collagen stimulation you need if you’re trying to treat dark circles or tighten the skin there.
That said, treating under-eye hollowing properly usually isn’t a one-product job. There’s rarely just one modality that fixes it. We’re typically looking at a biostimulator like Rejuran®, alongside something like light-based devices, and possibly a targeted approach to fade any pigment sitting under the eye. It’s a tricky area that calls for a skilled practitioner, careful treatment planning, and a proper assessment. Make sure to get a proper assessment of how your cheek sits in relation to what we call the lid-cheek junction, and how hollow you actually are in that area, before deciding on a plan.
Rejuran® is also well suited to scar tissue. That includes traumatic scarring, so if you’ve had an accident or trauma to the face involving sutures, we can often treat right into the scar line. It’s also genuinely useful for old acne scarring – sometimes alongisde other treatments like BBL laser.
What Should You Know Before Starting Rejuran®?
A typical Rejuran course involves two to three treatments roughly a month apart, followed by an occasional maintenance session to help maintain the results. It’s not a one-and-done treatment, so it’s worth going in expecting a short course rather than a single visit.
What Does a Rejuran® Treatment Course Involve?
On its own, a Rejuran course is a straightforward series of injections placed just under the skin, but it’s often more effective when combined with another treatment targeting the same concern. For general skin rejuvenation, standalone Rejuran on its own can genuinely lift skin quality over a course of sessions.
For scarring, though, we tend to get better results by combining it with something else. You’ll see we do a fair bit of combination treatment work here, particularly with Dr Syed and now with Dr Maysa. A common pairing is a laser that penetrates through the scar tissue and breaks it up under the skin, a process called subcision, combined with Rejuran® afterwards. The laser disrupts the old scar tissue, and the biostimulator helps rebuild the quality of the skin on top of it. It’s a genuinely useful combination, and one we’ll likely be building on further once the new BBL HEROic device arrives at the clinic, giving us another laser option to pair with Rejuran® for scar work.
If you think either under-eye hollowing or scarring might be something Rejuran® could help with, the best next step is a proper consult with our nurses, so they can assess your skin and guide you through what course of treatment makes sense.
