What is Areola and Nipple Reduction Surgery?
Areola and nipple reduction surgery is a procedure designed to alter the size or shape of the areolas and nipples. This may help patients seeking changes in proportion or balance between their areolas, nipples, and the rest of their breasts.
The procedure typically involves removing specific areas of tissue and reshaping the areola or nipple to achieve the desired result. It can be performed on its own or alongside other breast-related procedure such as breast augmentation or breast reduction. Patients considering this treatment are encouraged to consult with an experienced medical professional to discuss their options and determine if the procedure aligns with their goals.

Additionally, a Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) questionnaire will need to be completed to assess your suitability for the procedure. To facilitate informed discussions and address any questions you may have, informational videos will be sent to your designated email prior to your meeting with Dr. Murray. During this time, we strongly encourage you to seek further information and education regarding your desired procedure, as well as consider obtaining a second opinion. After the 7-day cooling-off period, you are welcome to proceed with scheduling your procedure and embark on your Absolute Cosmetic journey.
What happens after Areola and Nipple Reduction Surgery?
Areola and nipple reduction surgery is typically performed as a day procedure. After the surgery, you will spend some time resting in our recovery suite until your caregiver arrives to take you home. It is normal to experience tenderness, swelling, and bruising during the recovery period.
Pain relief may be provided, and it is important to take this as directed to help manage any discomfort. To ensure proper healing, it’s recommended to avoid direct physical contact with the chest area for 3 to 4 weeks and refrain from lifting heavy objects or engaging in strenuous activities for the first 4 to 6 weeks.
During your follow-up appointments, you will receive individualised aftercare instructions tailored to your recovery.
Recovery
Recovery time following areola and nipple reduction surgery is generally manageable for most patients. Many individuals find that they can return to work within 1 to 2 days after the procedure. However, it is normal for swelling and bruising in the treated area to persist for a longer period.
Patients are advised to follow all post-operative care instructions carefully to support the healing process. Recovery experiences can vary based on factors such as age, genetics, and lifestyle, so it is important to allow sufficient time for healing.
Risks
Areola and nipple reduction surgery, like any surgical procedure, carries potential risks. These may include:
- Infection: There is a risk of infection at the surgical site, which may require antibiotics or additional medical care.
- Changes in sensation: The procedure may cause temporary or permanent changes in nipple sensation, such as numbness or increased sensitivity.
- Scarring: Scarring is a possibility with any surgical procedure. The extent of scarring can vary based on factors such as individual healing and the surgical technique used.
- Asymmetry: There is a chance of asymmetry between the two nipples or areolas following the procedure. Additional treatments may be required to address this.
- Changes in breastfeeding ability: While many patients retain the ability to breastfeed, there is a potential risk of changes in breastfeeding ability due to alterations in nipple anatomy.
Full Risks & Complications are available.
It is important for individuals considering areola and nipple reduction surgery to discuss these potential risks with their doctor and carefully weigh the benefits against the possible complications. Following the doctor’s pre- and post-operative instructions is crucial to help minimise risks and support optimal healing.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR NIPPLE AND AREOLA REDUCTION SURGERY
It is imperative to strictly avoid smoking, vaping, and illicit drug use before, during, and after the procedure. Nicotine consumption during the surgical process heightens the risk of complications, infection, delayed healing, or an unsatisfactory cosmetic outcome.
All patients are required to adhere to the following pre-operative and post-operative guidelines:
Please note that we maintain a stringent cancellation policy for those who continue to smoke or vape and fail to adhere to compulsory guidelines. We advise all patients to cease smoking, vaping, and passive smoking at least four weeks prior to the procedure and for six to eight weeks post-operatively.
Reducing nicotine intake alone does not eliminate the risk of complications; the best way to minimise risks and improve surgical outcomes is to quit smoking entirely. We strongly encourage the use of nicotine cessation aids during this period to support your efforts to quit. For more detailed information about potential complications and guidance on quitting smoking, please refer to the provided resource.
It is important to note that if you have smoked, vaped, or been exposed to passive smoking within the last four weeks prior to your procedure, your surgery will be cancelled, and any payment made will not be refunded.
To ensure your readiness for the procedure, being in good health is essential. It is crucial to avoid blood-thinning medications.
- NO ANTI-INFLAMMATORIES: Please DO NOT take any aspirin, Nurofen (ibuprofen), vitamin E, fish oil, green tea, turmeric, or other anti-inflammatory medications for ten (10) days prior to your procedure.
Additionally, a blood test should be conducted at least two weeks (base bloods) or at least four weeks (cotinine nicotine test, if applicable) before the scheduled procedure. A nurse will go through an extensive checklist to ensure that you are well-prepared via a pre-operative call before your procedure day.
Pre-op Reminders
- ALLERGIES: Please ensure you inform Dr Murray of any allergies you have to medication, latex, Betadine, Chlorhexidine, or sticking plasters/tapes.
- ANTIBACTERIAL WASH: A thorough Chlorhexidine body and hair wash (antibacterial) is necessary the morning of the procedure.
- FASTING: Fast for six hours prior to your procedure – no food or fluids. However, you may take a small sip of water in the morning to consume any pre-surgery medication if necessary.
- ANTIHISTAMINE: Dr Murray has requested one Claratyne (antihistamine) to be taken the evening prior to your procedure. This can be purchased from your local supermarket or chemist.
- CLOTHING: For your comfort, please wear loose, dark, comfortable clothing with buttons on the front (e.g., a tracksuit). No tight jeans, pants, belts, or tight tops. Flat shoes only, please.
- FALSE EYELASHES: Please do not wear false eyelashes on the day of the procedure.
- HAIR AND JEWELLERY: If you have long hair, please tie it back and remove all jewellery and piercings, except for wedding rings.
- PERSONAL CARE: Patients must avoid wearing perfume, nail polish (including shellac, gel, BIAB, acrylic, etc.), deodorant, or make-up.
All paperwork must be completed before the procedure and will be sighted and signed by your admitting surgical nurse.
The procedure should only take 1 to 2 hours. This may vary from time to time and is only a guideline. During the procedure, Dr Murray will make a doughnut-shaped incision in the areola and remove the excess areola; this will be at the edge of the areola to reduce the visibility of scarring.
