Implants And Placement Options
We offer smooth and microtextured silicone implants from Edit to follow manufacturers (e.g., Polytech, Motiva). Selection (type, size, profile) is confirmed after an in-person assessment.
Common placement approaches
- Subglandular (above the muscle)
- Subfascial
- Submuscular (under the pectoralis major)
- Dual plane
Suitability depends on anatomy, tissue characteristics and goals. Your practitioner will explain potential benefits, limitations, risks and typical recovery for each option. Where appropriate, internal support suturing techniques may be discussed.
What to Expect
Consultation
A valid GP referral is required. Your consultation covers medical history, implant and placement choices, incision options, anaesthesia, risks and recovery timelines. You’re encouraged to ask questions and consider a second opinion.
Hospital and anaesthesia
Procedures are performed at licensed day-surgery facilities in Perth (including Concept Day Hospital) with an accredited theatre team. A qualified anaesthetist provides anaesthesia.
Cooling-off period
A minimum seven-day cooling-off period applies in line with cosmetic surgery guidance.
Surgery day and discharge
In every breast augmentation surgery, the Keller Funnel plays a crucial role in the implant insertion process. It is a cone-shaped device made of a lubricated material that allows us to:
- Minimise Incision Size: The Keller Funnel enables us to use smaller incisions during implant placement, which can lead to reduced scarring and shorter recovery times.
- Reduce Risk of Contamination: By using the Keller Funnel, the implant never touches the skin directly, reducing the risk of contamination and potentially lowering the risk of complications such as infection.
Complex or Revision Breast Surgery
Breast augmentation is usually a day procedure. A responsible adult must accompany you on discharge and supervise you for the first 24 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions
All surgical procedures, including augmentation mammoplasty, carry risks. Potential complications can include infection, bleeding, changes in nipple sensation, scarring, capsular contracture, or implant rupture. There are also anaesthetic and healing-related risks. During your consultation, your practitioner will discuss these in detail, along with measures taken to reduce risks and how to recognise complications. Every patient’s recovery and outcome are unique.
Before deciding on breast augmentation, it’s important to understand your options, potential surgical risks, and recovery requirements. You should:
- Read educational materials on breast implants, surgical techniques and aftercare
- Consider your motivations and aesthetic goals carefully
- Discuss your medical history, medications and lifestyle factors with your practitioner
- Seek a GP referral and, if needed, a second opinion from a specialist plastic surgeon
Review your consent forms thoroughly before proceeding
Informed consent and realistic expectations are essential before any cosmetic plastic surgery procedure.
Breast augmentation (also known as augmentation mammaplasty) involves decisions about implant type, placement and size, all of which affect results and recovery. Your practitioner will discuss surgical options such as subglandular, subfascial, submuscular or dual-plane implant placement. You may also discuss non-implant alternatives, such as fat grafting or fat transfer, where suitable.
Take time to read about different implant technologies, including silicone gel implants and saline implants, and ensure you understand their differences. Your practitioner will explain which options best align with your anatomy and desired outcome.
After surgery, your care team provides clear aftercare instructions and follow-up appointments to monitor recovery. You’ll be advised to wear a surgical compression garment for several weeks, avoid strenuous activity and attend all scheduled post-op reviews.
Follow-up appointments form part of our clinical care process. They allow practitioners to assess healing, manage discomfort, and provide tailored post-op support. Your practitioner will also discuss how to monitor for rare complications such as implant rupture, infection or delayed wound healing.
While breast implants are long-lasting medical devices, they are not considered lifetime devices. Factors such as ageing, hormonal changes, weight fluctuation and implant condition can affect longevity. Periodic reviews and imaging are recommended to monitor implant integrity. If issues such as rupture or shape changes occur, replacement or removal may be considered.
Some patients consider fat transfer, also called autologous fat grafting, as an alternative to implants. This involves using your own fat cells to enhance breast volume. However, this is not suitable for everyone and usually produces a smaller change compared to implants. Your practitioner will advise whether this technique is appropriate for your goals.
Light activities are usually resumed within two to three weeks, depending on your recovery and the surgical techniques used. Strenuous upper-body exercise, heavy lifting and swimming should be avoided until cleared by your practitioner. Every patient’s recovery is unique, and your specific timeline will be discussed during follow-up.
Contact your practitioner promptly if you experience significant pain, swelling, redness, fever or any unusual symptoms. Immediate follow-up ensures early management of potential complications and supports safe healing.
Most patients retain the ability to breastfeed, but this can depend on factors such as incision location, implant placement and personal anatomy. Your practitioner will explain how your surgical plan might affect breastfeeding in your particular case.
Bring your GP referral, a list of medications, and any relevant medical reports. It’s helpful to write down questions about surgical options, implant placement, and aftercare. Your consultation is a chance to discuss expectations, review previous surgery history and ensure you feel informed before making a decision.
No. Use a Chlorhexidine antibacterial wash on your body and face. Avoid perfumes, deodorant, make-up, or nail polish. If you have long hair, tie it back and remove all jewellery.
Breast augmentation is a significant decision that requires thorough research and professional guidance. Taking time to read, ask questions and consider all information carefully helps ensure your choice aligns with your health, values and goals.
