What is Breast Implant Removal?
Breast implant removal is undertaken for various reasons. Some patients opt for removal and replacement, while others may choose complete removal without replacement. If breast implants are aged, damaged, or ruptured, they cannot be repaired and must be removed, with the option for replacement. It is commonly suggested by manufacturers that implants be replaced approximately every 10 years, though individual circumstances may vary.
Other reasons for removal and replacement may include switching out old textured implants, which may pose a higher risk of lymphoma, altering the size or placement of implants, addressing complications like capsular contraction, or pursuing the procedure after breastfeeding.
In some cases, patients may choose not to replace their implants during the removal process, depending on personal preferences and medical considerations.

Risks
Breast implant removal, like any surgical procedure, carries certain risks and potential complications. It’s crucial for individuals considering breast implant removal to understand these risks. Some of the risks associated with breast implant removal include: Infection, bleeding, changes in breast shape or contour, breast asymmetry, anesthesia risks to name a few. The likelihood of these risks varies for each individual and is influenced by factors such as surgical technique, implant type, and overall health. It’s crucial to have a thorough discussion with the medical team to understand how these factors may affect you.
Recovery
The recovery period for breast implant removal typically spans around two weeks, although it can vary significantly from one patient to another due to several factors, including age, genetics, and lifestyle choices. Patients with a healthier and more active lifestyle may experience a faster recovery, while those with certain genetic predispositions or advanced age may require a longer healing period. Additionally, the complexity of the removal procedure, whether it involves implant exchange, capsulectomy, or other surgical adjustments, can influence the recovery timeline.

What happens before the Breast Implant Removal procedure?
In accordance with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) protocol, it is a prerequisite to obtain a GP referral for all cosmetic surgical procedures before scheduling a consultation with Dr. Glenn Murray. Additionally, a Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) questionnaire will need to be completed to assess your suitability for the procedure. To facilitate informed discussions and address any questions you may have, informational videos will be sent to your designated email prior to your meeting with Dr. Murray. Following a second consultation with a member of our clinical team, a mandatory 7-day cooling off period will commence. During this time, we strongly encourage you to seek further information and education regarding your desired procedure, as well as consider obtaining a second opinion. After the 7-day cooling off period, you are welcome to proceed with scheduling your procedure and embark on your Absolute Cosmetic journey.
It is imperative to strictly avoid smoking, vaping, and illicit drug use before, during, and after the procedure. Nicotine consumption during the surgical process heightens the risk of complications, infection, delayed healing, or an unsatisfactory cosmetic outcome. Please note that we maintain a stringent cancellation policy for those who continue to smoke or vape. We advise all patients to cease smoking at least 2 weeks before the procedure and to abstain for 6 weeks following the procedure. Reducing nicotine intake does not diminish the risk of complications; the most substantial health benefit is derived from quitting smoking altogether. We highly recommend and encourage the use of nicotine cessation aids during this period. For more comprehensive information regarding potential complications and guidance on quitting smoking, please refer to this resource.
It is vital to note that if you have smoked within the last 2 weeks, the procedure will be cancelled, and payment will not be refunded.
To ensure your readiness for the procedure, being in good health is essential. It’s crucial to avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, fish oil, green tea, and turmeric leading up to the procedure. Additionally, a blood test should be conducted at least 1 week before the scheduled procedure. A nurse will go through an extensive checklist to ensure that you are well prepared, via a pre-operative call before your procedure day.
On the day of the procedure, fasting is mandatory, meaning you should refrain from consuming food or water for 6 hours prior to your scheduled surgical start time. However, you may take a small sip of water in the morning to consume any pre-surgery medication if necessary. These steps are crucial to ensuring both your safety and the best possible outcome from the procedure. All paperwork must be completed before the procedure and will be sighted and signed by your admitting surgical nurse.
What happens on the day of the procedure?
Preperation
Before the procedure, it is crucial that all pre-operative medications are taken, and you are appropriately fasted. Additionally, it is imperative that a pre-operative wash has been undertaken before your arrival. The medical team will conduct an extensive pre-operative and admission checklist to ensure all necessary measures are in place. Prior to the commencement of the procedure, assessments by the nurse, doctor, and anesthetist will be carried out, and you will then change into a surgical gown before being escorted to the fully-licensed and credentialed theatre.
Sedation/Anesthetic
Upon entering the operating theatre and being comfortably positioned on the operating table, the anesthetist will insert a cannula into your arm to administer sedation. Throughout the procedure, our medical team and advanced equipment will closely monitor you, prioritising your safety to ensure a secure and well-managed surgical experience.
The Procedure
The area will be made numb by tumescent local anaesthesia. Many patients report this to be especially beneficial, as they awaken completely numb. The procedure will take between one and three hours, plus two hours for recovery.
Note: Your nominated carergiver must drop you off, pick you up and take care of you for the first night. They will also need to drive you to your Day 1 post operative appointment in Nedlands with our medical team for review.
What happens after the procedure?
On the initial night post-surgery, it is imperative to have continuous supervision. Your designated caregiver will assist you in safely navigating to and from the restroom and remain vigilant for any signs of dizziness or light-headedness. Should you experience such sensations, it is advisable to lie flat and elevate your legs. Your caregiver will also be responsible for administering your prescribed medications and ensuring your comfort throughout the night.
During the transition from the care of the nurse to that of your caregiver, the latter will receive Dr. Murray’s mobile number, providing access to urgent 24/7 assistance. If at any point during the night, you or your caregiver have concerns regarding your well-being, we strongly encourage you to reach out to him. Dr. Murray will also maintain contact throughout the night to ensure both you and your caregiver are managing well and feeling comfortable.
On the following day, our caring nursing team will conduct a thorough assessment of your condition. This evaluation will include vital sign measurements and provide an opportunity for you to receive guidance on your post-operative care plan. Additionally, your dressings will be carefully removed, cleaned, and replaced during this visit, and you will also be reviewed by Dr. Murray. The nursing staff will discuss showering guidelines and address any other necessary protocols with you.
While it’s important to get up and move around on the first day to promote healthy blood circulation, it is crucial to exercise caution. Please note that the initial two weeks are designated for strict rest and recovery, and it’s not advisable to plan any travel or engage in holiday activities during this period. Your well-being and a smooth recovery process are our top priorities.
