See All Before & AfterBenefits of a Breast Reduction
Breast reduction surgery aims to alleviate physical discomfort physical discomfort associated with oversized breasts. Beyond these primary outcomes, the procedure offers additional benefits, including:
- Improved Posture: Excess breast tissue can strain the shoulders and contribute to neck pain, leading to poor posture. Breast reduction addresses this issue, promoting better alignment.
- Increased Mobility: Excessive breast tissue may hinder engagement in physical activities due to discomfort or restricted movement. Breast reduction enhances mobility, making it easier to participate in various activities.
- Enhanced Comfort: Breast reduction surgery is designed to help reduce physical discomfort associated with oversized breasts. It may also offer benefits such as improved posture and enhanced comfort, although outcomes can vary depending on individual circumstances.
- Clothing Versatility: Individuals with large breasts often face challenges finding well-fitting clothes. Breast reduction expands clothing options, allowing for more choices in comfortable and appropriately sized attire.
Candidates for a Breast Reduction
Candidates for breast reduction surgery should be in good physical health and have realistic expectations about the possible outcomes of the procedure. A consultation is essential to determine individual suitability. Potential candidates may exhibit one or more of the following characteristics, including large and heavy breast tissue, disproportionate breast size, neck pain, challenges in finding well-fitting clothing, and limitations in participating in physical activities. However, it is crucial to undergo a consultation for this surgical intervention to assess individual suitability and determine if breast reduction is the appropriate course of action. Additionally, being a non-smoker is considered essential, as smoking may elevate the risk of complications during the surgery.
How to Prepare Before Breast Reduction Surgery
In accordance with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) protocol, it is a prerequisite to obtain a GP referral for all cosmetic surgical procedures before scheduling a consultation with Dr. Glenn Murray. Additionally, a Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) questionnaire will need to be completed to assess your suitability for the procedure. To facilitate informed discussions and address any questions you may have, informational videos will be sent to your designated email prior to your meeting with Dr. Murray. Following a second consultation with a member of our clinical team, a mandatory 7-day cooling off period will commence. During this time, we strongly encourage you to seek further information and education regarding your desired procedure, as well as consider obtaining a second opinion. After the 7-day cooling off period, you are welcome to proceed with scheduling your procedure and embark on your Absolute Cosmetic journey.
It is imperative to strictly avoid smoking, vaping, and illicit drug use before, during, and after the procedure. Nicotine consumption during the surgical process heightens the risk of complications, infection, delayed healing, or an unsatisfactory cosmetic outcome. Please note that we maintain a stringent cancellation policy for those who continue to smoke or vape. We advise all patients to cease smoking at least 2 weeks before the procedure and to abstain for 6 weeks following the procedure. Reducing nicotine intake does not diminish the risk of complications; the most substantial health benefit is derived from quitting smoking altogether. We highly recommend and encourage the use of nicotine cessation aids during this period. For more comprehensive information regarding potential complications and guidance on quitting smoking, please refer to this resource.
It is vital to note that if you have smoked within the last 2 weeks, the procedure will be canceled, and payment will not be refunded.
To ensure your readiness for the procedure, being in good health is essential. It’s crucial to avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, fish oil, green tea, and turmeric leading up to the procedure. Additionally, a blood test should be conducted at least 1 week before the scheduled procedure.
On the day of the procedure, fasting is mandatory, meaning you should refrain from consuming food or water for 6 hours prior to your scheduled surgical start time. However, you may take a small sip of water in the morning to consume any pre-surgery medication if necessary. These precautions are taken to optimize your safety and the success of the procedure.
What to Expect During Your Breast Reduction Procedure
The Procedure
The breast reduction surgery is typically performed as a day-case procedure under sedation in our licensed day surgery clinic. Patients are usually admitted early in the morning/afternoon and discharged later in the afternoon, allowing for a convenient and efficient recovery process.
Post Procedure
Following breast reduction surgery, patients will proceed to the recovery area and subsequently be discharged to return home under the care of their nominated caregiver for rest. The next day, a follow-up appointment with one of our nurses is scheduled to monitor recovery progress and detail your aftercare protocols.
Absolute Cosmetic Perth prioritises patient well-being and aims to minimise discomfort throughout the process. Consequently, all surgical procedures, including breast reduction, are conducted under neurolept sedation to ensure a comfortable and patient-focused experience.
Risks and the Recovery After Breast Reduction Surgery
Risks
Breast reduction surgery, like any surgical procedure, carries certain risks and potential complications. Some of the risks associated with breast reduction surgery include: Infection, changes in sensation to nipples and breasts, changes in breast shape or contour, scarring, wound healing problems, hematoma or seroma, or anesthesia risks to name a few.
It’s important to note that the likelihood of experiencing these risks varies from person to person and depends on factors such as surgical technique, individual health status, and adherence to post-operative instructions. Patients should thoroughly discuss their medical history, expectations, and concerns with our medical team of nurses and doctors to minimise risks and achieve the best possible outcomes. Regular follow-up appointments will be booked to ensure you are monitored and given the appropriate aftercare for your recovery.
Recovery
It’s typical to experience some discomfort in the initial days following breast reduction surgery. While many patients notice improvements within the first week, swelling can persist for up to 6 weeks. The final results may become more apparent around three months, but the full outcome may take up to 12 months for some patients.
Recovery time can vary among patients, with some individuals able to resume regular activities within 5-7 days after breast reduction surgery. We recommend incorporating light exercise at 1 week, progressing to moderate exercise at 2 weeks, and full resumption of regular activities at 3 weeks. However, it’s advisable to avoid extreme exercise for a period of 6-12 weeks following the procedure to ensure a gradual and safe return to physical activities. Individual recovery guidelines may be adjusted based on the patient’s differing healing process and factors of age, genetics or lifestyle.
