What are Cosmelan Depigmentation Peels?

The Cosmelan® method is a two-part program that combines several active ingredients: an in-clinic mask followed by an at-home skincare routine. A typical chemical peel uses exfoliating acids to remove the top layers of skin, which can help brighten the complexion, even out skin tone and improve the appearance of spots and fine lines.

Cosmelan® is also designed to reduce the appearance of existing spots, and the at-home phase is designed to help maintain results over time. Pigmentation can return, particularly with sun exposure or hormonal changes, so daily sun protection and ongoing home care are part of the program.

Your suitability, likely results and any risks will be discussed with you at your consultation.

What does the Perth Cosmelan Treatment involve?

4 weeks prior to the treatment being done it is recommended that prep is completed, simply implementing a 10% Glycolic Acid into your skin regime is all that is recommended.

  • The Cosmelan depigmentation treatment is a two-phase process designed to address various forms of hyperpigmentation.

Phase one begins with the application of a powerful depigmenting mask at an Absolute Cosmetic clinic. The mask is left on for 6-8 hours to penetrate the skin and target excess melanin.

Phase two transitions to an at-home maintenance regimen with specialised creams, applied twice daily, to enhance and prolong the results achieved in the clinic.

How long will it take to see results from Cosmelan?

In the initial weeks after treatment, many patients notice improvements in skin texture and tone. This is only the first stage of the program.

Pigmentation often tends to return, so continuing your at-home routine as directed, along with daily sun protection, is important for maintaining results. Stopping home care early can reduce the benefit of the treatment. Results vary from person to person.

Why Choose Absolute Cosmetic Perth for your Cosmelan Treatment?

  • At Absolute Cosmetic Perth, a consultation before treatment lets us assess your skin, discuss whether Cosmelan is suitable for you and explain the potential risks.
  • We have an in-house training program to ensure our nurses and Dermal Therapists perform treatments consistently and safely.
  • One of Perth’s first full-time cosmetic clinics, with five locations for convenience, proudly doctor-run and operated.

Potential Benefits of Cosmelan Peel

Reduced Appearance of Pigmentation

Cosmelan Peel may help reduce the appearance of several types of pigmentation, including melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, age spots and freckles. Many patients see a visible reduction in dark patches and uneven spots, although the degree of improvement varies and depends on the type and depth of pigmentation.

A More Even-Looking Skin Tone

By reducing the appearance of discolouration, Cosmelan Peel can help skin tone look more even and the complexion look brighter.

Home Care to Help Maintain Results

The at-home phase of the program is designed to help maintain results over time. Pigmentation can still return, particularly with sun exposure, hormonal changes or inflammation, so daily sun protection and ongoing home care are important.

An Option for Persistent Pigmentation

Some pigmentation, including melasma, may not respond well to over-the-counter products or lighter treatments. Cosmelan Peel may be an option for these concerns. Your clinician will assess your skin at consultation and advise whether it is suitable for you, or whether another treatment may be more appropriate.

Smoother-Looking Skin Texture

As the skin renews after the peel, many patients notice their skin texture looks smoother and more refined. Results vary between individuals.

Recovery Time & What to Expect

Most patients can expect around 5–7 days of visible recovery, during which the skin undergoes a natural renewal process.

Immediately After Treatment (Days 1–3):

  • Skin will likely appear red, slightly swollen, and feel warm, similar to a mild sunburn.
  • This is a normal response as the peel begins working on the skin.
  • Some tightness may be felt as the skin prepares to shed damaged outer layers.

Peeling & Renewal Phase (Days 3–7):

  • Peeling and flaking usually begin around day three, accompanied by some dryness.
  • Shedding is a sign of accelerated cell turnover, as newer skin comes through.
  • It’s important not to pick or pull at peeling skin to avoid irritation or uneven results.

Post-One Week:

  • By day 7, most redness and peeling have subsided, and patients notice their skin looks brighter and more even.
  • Residual dryness or light flaking may persist for a short time but can be easily managed with recommended post-care treatments.
  • Consistent home care is essential for achieving and maintaining your results. Skipping the home care routine can reduce the benefit of the treatment.

Possible Risks and Side Effects:

  • Redness, swelling, warmth, stinging or tightness in the days after treatment.
  • Dryness, irritation or increased skin sensitivity, including to sunlight.
  • Uncommonly, darkening of pigmentation (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation), which may be more likely in some skin types.
  • Pigmentation may return, particularly if home care or sun protection is not maintained.

Results vary between individuals. Your clinician will discuss the risks relevant to you at your consultation.

Cosmelan may help reduce the appearance of pigmentation, such as melasma, sun damage, age spots, freckles, acne-related pigmentation and uneven skin tone. Your suitability is assessed at consultation.

Most patients experience 5–7 days of visible recovery, including redness, peeling and dryness. The intensity varies from person to person.

Many patients notice visible improvement in pigmentation and overall skin brightness within 2–3 weeks. Results can continue to improve over the following months with consistent home care, and vary between individuals.
