What Are Dermal Fillers?
Over time, the skin may experience a natural decrease in volume and structure due to a reduction in essential proteins. This can affect facial contours, particularly around the cheeks, lips, and hands.
Dermal fillers are composed of a substance naturally found in the body and are commonly used to restore lost volume. They can also refine facial contours and add fullness to the lips. When combined with wrinkle relaxers, dermal fillers can provide a more tailored approach to addressing individual concerns.
At Absolute Cosmetic, our experienced team offers a range of dermal filler options tailored to individual needs. We adhere to high medical standards and use only products approved for use in Australia. To learn more, we offer express nurse consultations where you can explore your treatment options in a professional setting.

What Are Collagen-Stimulating Fillers & How Long Do They Last?
Collagen-stimulating fillers add volume to correct deep lines and restore lost volume while using the body’s natural response to stimulate the formation of your collagen. This procedure offers long-lasting results.
Depending on the product used, the initial results can last up to four years, and you may see long-term benefits even after the product has been broken down due to the creation of new collagen.
We also offer Skin Booster Injections (also known as Micro Filler).
What Are the Risks and Side Effects of Dermal Fillers?
As with any invasive cosmetic procedure, there are risks associated with dermal fillers. Potential risks include rare but serious complications such as occlusion of blood vessels or allergic reactions, highlighting the importance of selecting an experienced injector.
Some common side effects of dermal filler include; swelling, bruising and localised discomfort.
What is Volume Optimisation in dermal filler treatments, and why is it important?
Volume Optimisation (VO) is a critical aspect of dermal filler treatments, focusing on restoring and enhancing facial volume. As we age, natural volume loss occurs due to factors such as fat depletion and decreased collagen production. Dermal fillers are designed to address these changes by replenishing volume in specific areas of the face, such as the cheeks, temples, and under the eyes.
Why Is Capillary Refill Time Important Before and After Dermal Fillers?
Assessing Vascular Health: A normal capillary refill time (typically less than 2 seconds) indicates healthy blood flow to the skin. This is crucial when considering areas for dermal filler injection to minimise the risk of complications.
Monitoring Post-Treatment: After dermal filler injections, monitoring capillary refill time can help identify any potential circulatory issues or complications.
Can Dermal Fillers Be Dissolved?
Dermal fillers offer a valuable option for enhancing your appearance. However, it’s essential to understand that side effects can sometimes arise following treatment. In such cases, dissolving dermal fillers may be a solution. The need to use this agent is uncommon, especially regarding filler migration. The process involves injecting a solution that breaks down the filler material and allows it to be absorbed by the body.
Depending on the amount and type of filler used, multiple treatments may be required to achieve desired results. Possible side effects of this procedure include bruising, swelling, redness, and discomfort, which are usually temporary and subside within a few days. Severe allergic reactions to the enzyme solution are rare but can occur.
After dissolving the previous filler, it is important to wait at least two weeks before having dermal fillers again. Consultation with a qualified medical practitioner is recommended to determine if this procedure is appropriate for you. The cost of filler dissolving starts from $220 per treatment.
What to Know Before Getting Dermal Filler Injections
You should be in good health before your dermal filler injections. At the consultation, we will take a complete medical history. Blood-thinning medications and anti-inflammatory products should be avoided for 1-week before Dermal Fillers. Smokers should cut down or quit at least one week beforehand.
The area should be clean and dry and free of makeup. Reading and signing the consent and aftercare forms is required to ensure you are well-informed before your consultation.
It is also essential to have an experienced injector performing your procedure. We have seen many poor results and complications due to inexperience. Government-approved injectable products and fully-trained injectors are essential.
Dermal Filler Injection Procedure
Sedation/Anesthetic
Numbing cream can be requested for a small additional cost or purchased from the pharmacy and applied half an hour before your dermal filler treatment.
In our clinic, experienced practitioners will administer a nerve block using a local anaesthetic. This significantly reduces discomfort for most patients, often to the point where it is barely noticeable. After the procedure, you will remain numb, minimising the need for additional anaesthetic during your dermal filler session.
The Procedure
Most small areas can be treated with dermal filler in 30-45 minutes. Suitable locations include the forehead, the frown, the temples, the cheeks, the periorbital tear trough region, the nasal bridge (non-surgical rhinoplasty), nasolabial folds, lips, perioral smoker lines, marionette lines, pre-jowl sulcus, jaw angle augmentation, chin augmentation and fine lines of the neck and hands.
After The Dermal Filler Procedure
We recommend you ice the area injected with dermal filler for 30 minutes after the procedure and 30 minutes before bed, plus again in the morning. An extra pillow or sleeping upright will help to reduce swelling.
Results are immediate and will usually last between 3 months to two years, and this will depend on the filler used and the individual.
There is no downtime, but there may be swelling and bruising for up to 1-week.
An aftercare sheet is given to all patients; you should closely follow this. Less than 2% of people need a filler top-up or readjustment. However, be mindful that immediately after the procedure swelling will be present. This will subside over time, you may believe the filler to be gone, however this is usually just reflective of a need for more volume to equal the swelling size, which can be done after 4 weeks.
