What is Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Erbium laser skin resurfacing is a cosmetic procedure that uses the precision of erbium lasers to gently remove the outer layers of the skin, encouraging the growth of new, healthy skin. This treatment is designed to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scars, and other skin irregularities, particularly on the face, neck, and hands. Erbium Laser Skin Procedure Overview

About Erbium Laser Resurfacing

The Erbium Laser is a type of resurfacing treatment that removes thin layers of skin in a controlled manner. It is commonly used for conditions such as fine lines and changes associated with sun exposure. Areas that can be treated include the face, including around the lips and eyes.

The treatment works by targeting water in the skin tissue to allow precise removal of surface layers. This process also initiates a healing response in the skin, which may result in some improvement in skin texture and firmness over time.

In addition to lines and wrinkles, Erbium Laser resurfacing can also be used to address uneven pigmentation, including sunspots and freckles, by removing the outer layers where these changes are most prominent.

How Does It Work?

The Erbium Laser uses infrared light energy to gently vaporise the outer layers of damaged skin. It works by targeting water molecules within skin cells. When these molecules absorb the laser energy, the cells rupture, allowing precise layer-by-layer removal of the damaged skin. This controlled process helps promote the regeneration of fresh, healthier skin.

Areas Commonly Treated with Erbium Laser

  • Face – Treatment can be considered for fine lines and changes related to sun exposure.
  • Perioral and Periorbital Areas (Lips and Eyes) – May be suitable for surface-level changes in these regions.
  • Neck and Hands – The procedure can also be applied to these areas to address visible signs of sun damage or uneven skin texture. Any tightening effect in these regions is generally less noticeable than on the face.

Acne Scarring

Erbium Laser resurfacing can be used as part of a treatment plan for acne scarring by removing superficial layers of the skin. This may lead to an improvement in skin surface irregularities. In cases of deeper scarring, additional sessions or alternative approaches may be considered, as the depth of treatment is limited for safety reasons.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON ERBIUM LASER SKIN RESURFACING

Review Absolute Cosmetic Perth’s essential pre-procedure instructions to minimise surgical risks. This checklist outlines nicotine-free timelines, medication restrictions and mandatory blood tests to support informed preparation.

Booking Process

In accordance with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) protocol, it is a prerequisite to obtain a GP referral for all cosmetic surgical procedures before scheduling a consultation with Dr. Glenn Murray (MED0001196978). Additionally, a Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) questionnaire will need to be completed to assess your suitability for the procedure. To facilitate informed discussions and address any questions you may have, informational videos will be sent to your designated email prior to your meeting with Dr. Glenn Murray (MED0001196978) (MED0001196978). Following a second consultation with a member of our clinical team, a mandatory 7-day cooling off period will commence. During this time, we strongly encourage you to seek further information and education regarding your desired procedure, as well as consider obtaining a second opinion. After the 7-day cooling off period, you are welcome to proceed with scheduling your procedure and embark on your Absolute Cosmetic journey.

Arrival

Arrive on time to be fully admitted by the medical team. On the day of the procedure, fasting is mandatory, meaning you should refrain from consuming food or water for 6 hours prior to your scheduled surgical start time. However, you may take a small sip of water in the morning to consume any pre-surgery medication if necessary. These precautions are taken to optimise your safety and the success of the procedure.

Nicotine

  • Stop smoking, vaping and all nicotine treatments—and avoid passive smoke—at least 4 weeks before surgery and for 6–8 weeks afterward.
  • Nicotine can slow healing and raise the chance of infection or an unsatisfactory cosmetic result.
  • Surgery will be cancelled, with fees forfeited, if you smoke, vpe or are exposed to smoke within four weeks of the procedure.
  • Use evidence-based quitting aids if needed; see the linked resource for support and further details on potential complications.

Medications & Supplements

Avoid blood-thinning agents for 10 days pre-op, including aspirin, Nurofen (ibuprofen), vitamin E, fish oil, green tea, turmeric and other anti-inflammatory treatments.

Blood Tests

  • Standard bloods: complete ≥ 2 weeks before surgery.
  • Cotinine (nicotine) test, if requested: complete ≥ 4 weeks before surgery.

What can you expect during the Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing treatment?

Sedation/Anesthetic

We recommend undergoing the Erbium laser procedure under neurolept sedation for optimal comfort. This treatment is carried out in our fully accredited day surgery facility. Typically, the procedure lasts about an hour, followed by a recovery period of approximately 2 hours. After this, you will be ready for discharge into the care of a responsible adult. Your nominated caregiver will need to take you home, stay with you for the night, and then accompany you back to our Nedlands clinic the next day for your day 1 post-procedure review. This process ensures your safety and comfort while providing the necessary support for a smooth recovery.

The Procedure

After the completion of the procedure, a moisturising gel bandage is applied to the treated area to alleviate any stinging sensation. This is further secured with white padded dressings and a crepe bandage to ensure protection and comfort. While the procedure typically results in minimal discomfort, pain relief medication will be prescribed to assist with your recovery. In the days following the treatment, you may experience some itching or a sensation of tightness in the skin, which are common signs of the skin’s natural healing process beginning.

The Risks

Erbium laser skin resurfacing aims to addresses a variety of skin concerns, including fine lines, scars, and hyperpigmentation. While it can deliver impressive results, it’s important to be aware of the potential risks associated with this treatment.

Such risks can include but not limited to pigment changes, infection, scarring and/or skin sensitivity.

Before undergoing erbium laser skin resurfacing, it’s crucial to discuss the potential risks and benefits with any of our team members. They can help determine if the procedure is suitable for your skin type and address any concerns you may have.

Erbium Laser Resurfacing Aftercare

Maintaining cleanliness and protection of the treated area is essential for optimal healing, and this requires diligent daily care, to be performed four times a day. As instructed by your nurses, this regimen includes a vinegar wash followed by the application of Dermeze ointment to the lasered areas. Adhering to this aftercare routine is crucial to prevent the skin from drying out and to avoid scab formation.

In addition to the prescribed aftercare routine, if you have pets, it’s important to ensure that they are kept away from the treated area. This precaution is necessary to prevent any potential infection to the exposed skin.

Typically, the skin will gradually heal over a period of 7 to 10 days following the treatment. This process is an important part of supporting an effective recovery.

Approximately two weeks after the procedure, once the treated area has completely healed, you may begin applying makeup to conceal any residual redness.

It is critically important to protect the treated skin from direct sunlight in the initial weeks following the procedure. Always wear hats and apply sunscreen, even for brief outdoor excursions. Sun exposure can be detrimental to the healing process, so taking these precautions is essential to ensure the best possible recovery and maintain the integrity of the treatment results.

It’s important to note that recovery from the Erbium laser procedure can vary significantly from person to person. Factors such as age, genetics, and lifestyle choices can all influence the healing process. While some individuals may heal rapidly, others might take a longer time to fully recover. This personalised aspect of healing should be considered when following post-procedure care instructions and when managing expectations about the recovery timeline.
