What is a Labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to alter the appearance of the labia minora, labia majora, or both. Changes in the labia’s shape may occur due to various factors, such as pregnancy, illness, or aging. Labiaplasty can modify the size, shape, or symmetry of the labia to address individual concerns.

In some cases, labiaplasty may be combined with other procedures, such as liposuction to the mons pubis, fat transfer to the labia majora, or laser treatments aimed at improving skin quality. These options are available to cater to specific patient needs, though the combination of procedures is not necessary for all cases.

Important things to consider before a Labiaplasty

The recovery journey and final outcome of your labiaplasty surgery can be influenced by a variety of factors. It is important to understand that every patient’s healing process is unique, and individual results may vary. In some cases, further procedures may be considered if necessary, but this is not guaranteed.

Differences in healing and the natural characteristics of your body can affect the final appearance. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain realistic expectations and discuss any concerns with your nursing team and Dr. Murray. Having a thorough understanding of the potential outcomes will help you prepare for the experience and manage expectations regarding results.

Expected Labiaplasty results

After labiaplasty surgery, you may notice initial changes, but it’s important to keep in mind that full results can continue to develop over a period of 3 to 6 months. The appearance of your labia may become smaller and more defined, though individual healing processes can vary. Factors such as age, genetics, lifestyle, and adherence to post-operative care instructions can all influence your healing and final outcome.

To support the best possible result, it is important to follow clinical instructions during your post-operative reviews. Should you have any concerns or questions during your recovery, proactive communication with your nurse or Dr. Murray is essential.

LABIAPLASTY IMPORTANT INFORMATION

In accordance with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) protocol, it is a prerequisite to obtain a GP referral for all cosmetic surgical procedures before scheduling a consultation with Dr. Glenn Murray. Additionally, a Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) questionnaire will need to be completed to assess your suitability for the procedure. To facilitate informed discussions and address any questions you may have, informational videos will be sent to your designated email prior to your meeting with Dr. Murray. Following a second consultation with a member of our clinical team, a mandatory 7-day cooling off period will commence. During this time, we strongly encourage you to seek further information and education regarding your desired procedure, as well as consider obtaining a second opinion. After the 7-day cooling off period, you are welcome to proceed with scheduling your procedure and embark on your Absolute Cosmetic journey.

It is imperative to strictly avoid smoking, vaping, and illicit drug use before, during, and after the procedure. Nicotine consumption during the surgical process heightens the risk of complications, infection, delayed healing, or an unsatisfactory cosmetic outcome. Please note that we maintain a stringent cancellation policy for those who continue to smoke or vape. We advise all patients to cease smoking at least 2 weeks before the procedure and to abstain for 6 weeks following the procedure. Reducing nicotine intake does not diminish the risk of complications; the most substantial health benefit is derived from quitting smoking altogether. We highly recommend and encourage the use of nicotine cessation aids during this period. For more comprehensive information regarding potential complications and guidance on quitting smoking, please refer to this resource.

It is vital to note that if you have smoked within the last 2 weeks, the procedure will be canceled, and payment will not be refunded.

To ensure your readiness for the procedure, being in good health is essential. It’s crucial to avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, fish oil, green tea, and turmeric leading up to the procedure. Additionally, a blood test should be conducted at least 1 week before the scheduled procedure. A nurse will go through an extensive checklist to ensure that you are well prepared, via a pre-operative call before your procedure day.

On the day of the procedure, fasting is mandatory, meaning you should refrain from consuming food or water for 6 hours prior to your scheduled surgical start time. However, you may take a small sip of water in the morning to consume any pre-surgery medication if necessary. These precautions are taken to optimize your safety and the success of the procedure. All paperwork must be completed before the procedure and will be sighted and signed by your admitting surgical nurse.

During Labiaplasty Surgery

The Procedure

During labiaplasty surgery, a small incision is made along the labia minora, and excess skin may be removed to achieve the desired shape and appearance. If a fat transfer to the labia majora is part of the procedure, fat will be injected to enhance and fill the area.

Labiaplasty is typically performed under neurolept sedation. The duration of the surgery may vary, generally taking between 1 to 2 hours, depending on individual factors. After the procedure, we will contact your designated caregiver and provide an approximate time for when it will be safe for you to be discharged.

Your caregiver will receive instructions on how to care for you over the next 24 hours and will also have access to Dr. Murray’s personal mobile number for any concerns. The following day, you will return to our Nedlands clinic for a post-operative review with one of our nurses, where you will receive further care instructions and support for your recovery. We encourage you to reach out to the clinic with any questions or concerns before, during, or after your procedure.

The Risks

Labiaplasty surgery, aimed at altering the size or shape of the labia minora or majora, carries certain potential risks. Infection, although rare, is a possibility, despite stringent sterilisation protocols and antibiotic prophylaxis. Excessive bleeding can also occur, and in such cases, it’s important to contact the after-hours support number for guidance.

Nerve damage is another risk due to the proximity of nerves to the surgical site. This can lead to temporary or, in some cases, permanent numbness, tingling, or altered sensation.

Scarring is a natural outcome of surgical procedures. While every effort is made to minimise visible scarring, the healing process is unique to each individual and can be influenced by factors such as wound care and healing responses. In some cases, asymmetry or irregularities in the labial contour may occur, potentially requiring corrective measures or a second surgery.

As with any surgical procedure, thorough pre-operative consultations, realistic expectations, and open communication with Dr. Murray and the clinical team are essential to understanding the potential risks and optimising the chances for a positive outcome.

Labiaplasty recovery and aftercare

The majority of labiaplasty patients experience a recovery period of approximately one to two weeks. During this time, it is common to experience some discomfort and swelling as part of the natural healing process. Pain medication may be prescribed to help manage any discomfort, and it’s important to follow your healthcare provider’s instructions for medication use.

Swelling is a typical part of healing and will gradually decrease over time. It’s important to be patient and allow your body to heal at its own pace while adhering to post-operative care instructions to support optimal recovery.

Recovery time can vary between individuals, depending on factors such as age, genetics, and overall health. Each person’s healing process is unique, and some may experience a faster or slower recovery. It’s essential to listen to your body, stay patient, and follow the guidance provided by Dr. Murray and the clinical team to ensure a successful recovery.

The timing for returning to work after labiaplasty can vary depending on the nature of your job and your individual recovery process. Many patients can return to work a few days after the procedure, but it’s important to consider the physical demands of your job and your personal healing progress.

For the first 7 days following surgery, it is essential to maintain cleanliness and moisture in the treated area. This can be achieved with betadine-soaked gauze, which supports the healing process. Vigorous physical activity should be avoided for 2 to 4 weeks, and it is advisable to refrain from sexual intercourse and the use of tampons for approximately 6 weeks. Additionally, taking probiotics with your prescribed antibiotics can help reduce the risk of thrush and aid in recovery. Following all post-operative instructions is important for a smooth healing process.

It is also important to monitor any changes in discharge after the surgery. If you notice any unusual or concerning changes, promptly contact your clinical team for advice and further care. Timely communication with your healthcare team is crucial to ensure any potential issues are addressed and to support your recovery.
