What is Lipedema?

Lipedema is a medical condition characterised by the abnormal accumulation of excess fat primarily in the lower part of the body, including the buttocks, thighs, and calves. It can also affect the upper arms but typically does not involve the hands or feet. Vaser Pro Liposuction and Renuvion Skin Tightening are treatments for early to moderate lipedema.

Lipedema is often confused with other conditions, particularly lymphedema and obesity. In some cases, lipedema can lead to a combination of lipedema and lymphedema, referred to as lipo-lymphedema, where fat accumulation obstructs lymphatic drainage.

The accurate diagnosis of lipedema can be challenging, and in some instances, it may be inaccurately diagnosed or mistaken for other conditions, especially in the later stages of the disease. It is essential for healthcare providers to differentiate between these conditions to provide appropriate treatment and care to patients dealing with lipedema. Misdiagnosis can lead to delayed or ineffective treatment and management of the condition.

How much fat can be removed with Liposuction?

The maximum amount of fat that can typically be removed in one session is around 5 liters. It’s essential for patients to have realistic expectations about this volume limitation. If a patient desires the removal of more fat than the maximum allowed in a single procedure, it is possible to perform multiple procedures with a few days between them, a technique known as staged mega liposuction. However, this approach must be approached cautiously and will be discussed with Dr Murray at the time of your consultation.

Maintaining a healthy diet and engaging in regular exercise are crucial components of post-operative care following liposuction. These practices help support overall well-being and can contribute to maintaining the results achieved through the procedure. It’s important for patients to adopt a healthy lifestyle to ensure the longevity of the improvement obtained from liposuction.

One of the advantages of liposuction is that it reduces the number of fat cells in the treated areas. This means that the fat cells in those specific areas are permanently removed, and the fat does not shift to other areas of the body. However, it’s important to note that remaining fat cells in untreated areas can still expand with weight gain, so maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential to prevent the accumulation of new fat in those areas. Liposuction results can be long-lasting when coupled with a commitment to a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Improvement

During a liposuction procedure, the maximum amount of fat that can typically be safely removed in one session is around 5 litres.

It’s important to note that the 5 litres of fat removed is not pure fat; it may also include tumescent fluid. Tumescent is an agent used to numb the area and disrupt fat cells for their removal during liposuction. Patients should discuss their goals and expectations with Dr Murray to determine the most appropriate and safe approach for their specific situation. Patient safety is a top priority in any liposuction procedure.

What results can I expect from Liposuction for Lipedema?

The recovery process following liposuction can involve various stages, and it’s important for patients to have realistic expectations about what to expect:

  1. Swelling: It’s common to experience swelling for up to 6 weeks after the procedure, which can lead to some initial disappointment in the appearance. Patience is key during this period.
  2. Visible Results: Some results may begin to appear within the first month post-procedure, but the most noticeable changes are often seen between 6 to 12 months.
  3. Lumps: Feeling but not necessarily seeing hard lumps at around 2 weeks post-surgery is normal. These lumps can persist for up to 6 months but generally shrink over time, contributing to skin tightening.
  4. Fluid Lumps: Fluid lumps with a wave-like appearance should be reported to the clinical team. While complications like seromas are rare, they should be addressed promptly. Any signs of infection, such as pus, redness, heat, or swelling, should also be reported immediately.
  5. Excess Skin: Liposuction is designed to remove excess fat deposits, and it will not significantly reduce or remove excess skin. However, procedures like Vaser Pro Lipo and J Plasma Renuvion Skin Tightening can offer some skin tightening and may be considered in combination with liposuction to achieve desired results.

Overall, patients should communicate openly with their nursing team, closely follow post-operative care instructions, and be patient during the recovery process to achieve the best possible outcome.
