What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a procedure that uses small needles and a natural chemical that is injected into the veins. This works to strip the inside of the vein. A cotton wool bud or roll is then applied to compress the vein and stop the blood flow through it. This usually causes the vein to wither and die. Not all veins may go at the first treatment and you may need multiple treatments for smaller stubborn veins.

What happens before your Sclerotherapy Vein Treatment treatment?

For starters, you must be in good health and have avoided blood thinning medication, such as aspirin and anti-inflammatory medication if possible. The leg area should be clean and dry, and preferably without moisturiser.

What happens during the treatment?

You lay flat and within 15 to 30 mins the area is treated with fine needles. Discomfort can range from nothing to a sensation similar to a bee sting. Entinox (laughing gas) is available if you feel greater discomfort.

Cotton wool buds and a stocking are placed on the leg. Surgical stockings of 15 to 20 mm of mercury are available from some pharmacies. A cheaper alternative is fitted tubi grip, which is worn immediately after the treatment. These should also be worn in bed, although can be removed if uncomfortable. They must be replaced once you stand up.

Spider Vein Treatment Aftercare

Generally, you must go for a 15-minute walk within 1 to 2 hours after treatment.

A stocking is worn for 24 hours and is then removed, along with cotton wool buds. The stocking is replaced for the next 3-7 days. While showering, the stocking may be covered by a clean garbage bag.

Your other leg or another area can be treated 24 hours later.

You should wait at least 24 hours until you exercise, as the cotton wool buds can cause friction blisters. Once these are removed, exercise is more acceptable. The area should be kept clean and dry after exercise.

You should not fly for at least 2 weeks after this treatment.

The area can be bruised for between 1-6 weeks, and the end results can take up to 3 months.
