What is Mini Face Lift Surgery?
A Mini Facelift, also known as a Rhytidectomy, Mini Lift or S-Lift, is a surgical procedure designed to reposition facial tissues with shorter operating and recovery times compared to a traditional facelift. This approach involves incisions placed around the ear to access underlying structures, including the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system). Dr. Murray uses this access point to adjust tissue positioning.
This procedure is generally considered by individuals looking to address changes in the mid-face and jawline. However, the most appropriate treatment will depend on a comprehensive consultation with Dr. Murray in Perth, where factors such as skin elasticity, facial anatomy, and overall health will be assessed to determine whether a mini facelift procedure is appropriate.

Suitable candidates for a Face Lift (Rhytidectomy)
Prior to your cosmetic consultation with Dr. Murray, it is essential to have a GP referral and complete the Body Dysmorphic Disorder questionnaire to assess your suitability and expectations regarding the cosmetic procedure. Ideal physical, mental, and emotional well-being is desirable for achieving favorable outcomes. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge that various contributing factors, such as age, genetics, skin and tissue characteristics, lifestyle, can either impede or lead to unforeseen issues. Realistic expectations will play a significant role and will be thoroughly discussed with Dr. Murray during your consultation to determine whether you are a suitable candidate for a Face Lift (Rhytidectomy).
If you are in the process of losing weight, it is advisable to consider waiting until you have reached your target weight before undergoing the procedure. This approach helps minimise the likelihood of needing additional revision surgery due to weight loss. Other factors that may lead to revision surgery will also be taken into account.
Alternative Surgical Options to the Facelift (Rhytidectomy)
The Ultra Mini Lift is carried out in much the same way as the Mini Lift procedure. In comparison with the Mini Lift, the Ultra Mini Lift utilises smaller incision sites with less excision of the skin and less muscle lift. This procedure is suitable for patients who do not yet require the Mini Lift.
A Closed Thread Lift is a minimally invasive procedure that does not require cutting the skin. It is more suitable for younger patients with good skin quality.
During the procedure, the threads are passed through the hairline towards the area to be lifted. They are passed just under the skin with a long needle and then used to pull the skin backwards to the hairline, resulting in the ‘lifting’ of the skin.
Alternative Non-Surgical Options to the Facelift (Rhytidectomy)
Silhouette Soft Threads, PDO Mint Threads and Tesslift Threads represent technological advancements involving the precise insertion of dissolvable threads beneath the skin. This technique offers a non-surgical alternative to a facelift (Rhytidectomy) and can potentially enhance the firmness of the midface, jawline, eyebrows, and neck.
Factors such as age, lifestyle, and genetics can influence the effectiveness of this procedure, among other things. Dr. Syed will thoroughly discuss these factors during your consultation at one of our Perth clinics. See more information on Non-Surgical Thread Lifts.
Cosmetic surgery medical requirements
From 1 July 2023, new regulations around cosmetic surgery were implemented by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulatory Agency (AHPRA) and the Medical Board of Australia. Please make sure you have read and understood these new reforms when considering your cosmetic surgery. Further information on this is discussed in “Mini Face Lift (Rhytidectomy) surgery important information” below.

RISKS
A mini facelift (Rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure that aims to address signs of aging in the lower face and neck by using shorter incisions and less extensive tissue dissection than a traditional facelift. However, like all surgeries, this procedure carries risks. These risks may include, but are not limited to:
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Hematoma
- Nerve damage
- Scarring
It is critical that all patients considering this procedure fully understand the associated risks and potential complications before making a decision. For a comprehensive list of the risks and complications associated with cosmetic surgery, please refer to our Risks and Complications page here, as well as the Facial Procedure Consent Form, here.
We strongly encourage patients to raise any concerns or questions about these potential risks during their consultation. Following the pre-operative and post-operative instructions provided by our clinical team aims to support recovery and can help reduce the likelihood of complications.
RECOVERY
Patients may encounter restricted facial movement during the initial 2-week period, and activities such as laughing or chewing may cause discomfort. We recommend avoiding facial massages or applying facial pressure for a minimum of 1 month. Typically, the maximum tensile strength is reached at around 21 days. However, it’s important to note that the recovery timeframe can vary from person to person and should not be regarded as an absolute duration.
In some cases, there can be an immediate visible improvement to the face. However, it’s typical for a gradual and ongoing improvement to develop over a 3-6 month timeframe. This improvement is attributed to collagen synthesis and the lifting and bunching effect. During the recovery period, there may also be occurrences of “puckering,” a common part of the healing process, for which our clinical team in Perth will provide guidance on minimising its visibility.

Mini Face Lift (Rhytidectomy) surgery important information
In accordance with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) protocol, it is a prerequisite to obtain a GP referral for all cosmetic surgical procedures before scheduling a consultation with Dr. Glenn Murray. Additionally, a Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) questionnaire will need to be completed to assess your suitability for the procedure. To facilitate informed discussions and address any questions you may have, informational videos will be sent to your designated email prior to your meeting with Dr. Murray. Following a second consultation with a member of our clinical team, a mandatory 7-day cooling off period will commence. During this time, we strongly encourage you to seek further information and education regarding your desired procedure, as well as consider obtaining a second opinion. After the 7-day cooling off period, you are welcome to proceed with scheduling your procedure and embark on your Absolute Cosmetic journey.
It is imperative to strictly avoid smoking, vaping, and illicit drug use before, during, and after the procedure. Nicotine consumption during the surgical process heightens the risk of complications, infection, delayed healing, or an unsatisfactory cosmetic outcome. Please note that we maintain a stringent cancellation policy for those who continue to smoke or vape. We advise all patients to cease smoking at least 2 weeks before the procedure and to abstain for 6 weeks following the procedure. Reducing nicotine intake does not diminish the risk of complications; the most substantial health benefit is derived from quitting smoking altogether. We highly recommend and encourage the use of nicotine cessation aids during this period. For more comprehensive information regarding potential complications and guidance on quitting smoking, please refer to this resource.
It is vital to note that if you have smoked within the last 2 weeks, the procedure will be canceled, and payment will not be refunded.
To ensure your readiness for the procedure, being in good health is essential. It’s crucial to avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, fish oil, green tea, and turmeric leading up to the procedure. Additionally, a blood test should be conducted at least 1 week before the scheduled procedure. A nurse will go through an extensive checklist to ensure that you are well prepared, via a pre-operative call before your procedure day.
On the day of the procedure, fasting is mandatory, meaning you should refrain from consuming food or water for 6 hours prior to your scheduled surgical start time. However, you may take a small sip of water in the morning to consume any pre-surgery medication if necessary. These precautions are taken to optimize your safety and the success of the procedure. All paperwork must be completed before the procedure and will be sighted and signed by your admitting surgical nurse.
Mild to moderate discomfort is a common experience during the first few days after face lift surgery. Your doctor will provide tailored pain management options to ensure your recovery is as comfortable as possible.
If you experience severe pain or difficulty managing discomfort, contact the Perth Absolute Cosmetic Clinic at (08) 9389 9099 promptly for guidance.
Yes, swelling and bruising are common after facelift surgery as part of the natural healing process. While noticeable swelling and bruising typically improve within 6 weeks, subtle swelling (micro-swelling) may persist for up to 6 months. To manage these symptoms, applying cold compresses and strictly following your post-operative care instructions can support recovery and comfort.
By following your Doctor’s guidance, you can minimise these effects and focus on achieving your desired results. Always consult your surgical team for personalised advice tailored to your recovery needs.
Minor bleeding or oozing is common in the first few days after facelift surgery and is usually part of the normal healing process. However, if you notice an increase in bleeding or if it becomes persistent, it’s essential to contact Dr. Murray or the clinic at (08) 9389 9099 immediately for guidance.
Prompt communication ensures your recovery stays on track and any concerns are addressed efficiently.
Clear or slightly pink drainage is a common occurrence after facelift surgery and is typically part of the healing process. However, if you notice a yellow, green, or foul-smelling discharge from the incision site, it’s important to contact the Absolute Cosmetic surgical team immediately. Early intervention can help address any concerns and ensure a smooth recovery.
Proper care of your incision site is crucial for healing after facelift surgery. On the day after your procedure, you’ll attend a Day 1 review at our Perth Nedlands clinic, where our nurses will guide you through post-operative care, including cleaning and managing your wounds at home.
Key tips for incision care:
- Keep the suture lines clean and apply the recommended ointment as instructed.
- Avoid touching or removing dressings unless specifically advised by our team.
- Ensure you purchase the required ointment before surgery, as per the instructions provided.
Adhering to these guidelines helps support recovery and minimises potential complications. If you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to contact the clinic.
If your dressing becomes loose following facelift surgery, it’s important to act promptly. Replace it with a clean, sterile dressing to protect the incision site and reduce the risk of infection.
For further guidance or if you’re unsure how to proceed, contact the clinic for professional advice. Proper post-operative care is essential for a smooth recovery and optimal healing.
Temporary numbness around the surgical site is a common part of the recovery process after facelift surgery. This sensation usually improves as healing progresses, though the timeline can vary for each individual. If you have any concerns or questions about numbness, be sure to address them during your follow-up appointment with your surgical team.
During the first week of recovery after facelift surgery, it’s recommended to rest indoors and prioritise recuperation. Light activities, such as brief five-minute walks, may be introduced during the second week, depending on your progress. Strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should typically be avoided for several weeks to allow proper healing.
Dr. Murray will provide personalised advice and a timeline tailored to your recovery, ensuring you return to your regular routine safely.
Recovery time after a facelift varies based on the procedure and individual factors. Most patients feel comfortable resuming daily routines about 2 weeks post-surgery, though healing is an ongoing process. Visible swelling and bruising typically improve within the first few weeks, while subtle enhancements and full recovery may take several months. Your surgical team will provide personalised guidance to support your healing journey.
Following facelift surgery, it’s best to start with soft foods to minimise strain during recovery. Avoid alcohol and highly salty foods, as these can contribute to swelling and may interfere with the healing process. Your doctor will provide personalised dietary recommendations tailored to your recovery needs, ensuring optimal results and comfort.
Yes, follow-up appointments are an essential part of your recovery process after facelift surgery. These appointments allow your surgical team to monitor your healing, assess progress, and address any concerns or questions you may have. Attending all scheduled follow-ups is crucial to ensure the best possible outcome and to receive personalised guidance throughout your recovery journey.
