Fat Transfer Procedure Overview

An amount of fat is harvested from a suitable donor site under local anesthesia. The fat is then treated, refined, and re-treated into the treatment area to increase volume and improve contours.

Injection Sites & Healing

Several small injection points are made to allow the fat to be implanted. These sites usually heal within a few days and rarely leave noticeable marks.

Recovery & Swelling

  • Initial swelling is common within the first 24–48 hours.
  • Swelling may persist for up to 6 weeks, with micro-swelling lasting up to 6 months.
  • Bruising and redness can remain visible for several weeks.
  • Recovery experiences vary between patients and depend on multiple factors.

Infection Prevention

As infection is a risk, patients are prescribed an antibiotic course before and after the procedure.

Potential Irregularities & Refinements

Occasionally, uneven filling or lumpiness may occur, which could require additional refinement procedures.

Multiple Sessions

In some cases, the treatment may need to be repeated 2–3 times due to factors like fat metabolism or to avoid over-correction in a single session. Multiple areas can be treated in one sitting, but conservative correction is recommended for natural results.

Longevity of Results

  • Successfully integrated fat cells are long-lasting.
  • Results may be affected by weight changes or the natural aging process.
  • Top-up procedures may be required over time to maintain the desired outcome.

Treatment Areas

Fat transfer can increase volume to:

  • Face and under-eye area
  • Cheeks and nasolabial folds
  • Breasts
  • Hips and body contours
  • Hands

What is Nano Fat?

Nano fat refers to fat that has been processed into a very fine, liquid-like form after being harvested from the patient’s own body. This processing reduces fat into tiny particles and retains regenerative components such as growth factors and stem cells, which are thought to assist in improving skin quality.

What Can Nano Fat Be Used For?

Nano fat grafting is considered for a range of aesthetic concerns, particularly where subtle volume increases and skin texture improvement are desired:

  • Acne Scars – May help soften the appearance of scars and depressions.
  • Facial Skin Quality – Can improve texture and stimulate collagen production over time.
  • Volume Restore – Provides subtle contouring to certain facial or body areas.
  • Lips – Sometimes used to add fullness and increase lip definition.
  • Other Hollow Areas – Can be used in regions of the face or body where soft tissue support is needed.

Recovery After Nano Fat Treatment

Recovery is generally shorter compared to more invasive surgeries. Most people experience mild swelling or bruising, which usually improves within a few days to a week. However, recovery can vary between individuals.

How Does Nano Fat Relate to Fat Transfer Surgery?

Nano fat is a refined form of traditional fat transfer. In a standard fat transfer procedure, fat is harvested from an area of the body (such as the abdomen or thighs), processed, and re-treated to increase volume or contour areas like the face, breasts, or body.

With Nano fat, the harvested fat is further processed into an ultra-fine, emulsified consistency. Unlike standard fat grafting, which adds volume, Nano fat is not primarily used for augmentation but for improving skin quality and texture.

FAT TRANSFER SURGERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Review Absolute Cosmetic Perth’s essential pre-procedure instructions to minimise surgical risks. This checklist outlines nicotine-free timelines, medication restrictions and mandatory blood tests to support informed preparation.

In accordance with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) protocol, it is a prerequisite to obtain a GP referral for all cosmetic surgical procedures before scheduling a consultation with Dr. Glenn Murray (MED0001196978). Additionally, a Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) questionnaire will need to be completed to assess your suitability for the procedure. To facilitate informed discussions and address any questions you may have, informational videos will be sent to your designated email prior to your meeting with Dr. Glenn Murray (MED0001196978) (MED0001196978). Following a second consultation with a member of our clinical team, a mandatory 7-day cooling off period will commence. During this time, we strongly encourage you to seek further information and education regarding your desired procedure, as well as consider obtaining a second opinion. After the 7-day cooling off period, you are welcome to proceed with scheduling your procedure and embark on your Absolute Cosmetic journey.

Arrival

Arrive on time to be fully admitted by the medical team. On the day of the procedure, fasting is mandatory, meaning you should refrain from consuming food or water for 6 hours prior to your scheduled surgical start time. However, you may take a small sip of water in the morning to consume any pre-surgery medication if necessary. These precautions are taken to optimise your safety and the success of the procedure.

Nicotine

  • Stop smoking, vaping and all nicotine treatments—and avoid passive smoke—at least 4 weeks before surgery and for 6–8 weeks afterward.
  • Nicotine can slow healing and raise the chance of infection or an unsatisfactory cosmetic result.
  • Surgery will be cancelled, with fees forfeited, if you smoke, vpe or are exposed to smoke within four weeks of the procedure.
  • Use evidence-based quitting aids if needed; see the linked resource for support and further details on potential complications.

Medications & Supplements

Avoid blood-thinning agents for 10 days pre-op, including aspirin, Nurofen (ibuprofen), vitamin E, fish oil, green tea, turmeric and other anti-inflammatory treatments.

Blood Tests

  • Standard bloods: complete ≥ 2 weeks before surgery.
  • Cotinine (nicotine) test, if requested: complete ≥ 4 weeks before surgery.

Risks and Recovery of Fat Transfer

Fat transfer surgery, also known as fat grafting or fat injection, involves harvesting fat from one area of the body (often the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks) and injecting it into another area to add volume or enhance contours. Alike any surgical procedure, it carries certain risks and requires a period of recovery. Here are some of the potential risks and the typical recovery process associated with fat transfer surgery:

Risks:

  1. Infection: Any surgical procedure carries a risk of infection. However, we will be providing you with antibiotic scripts that you must fill prior to surgery and our registered nurses will detail when you should start taking them.
  2. Bruising and Swelling: Bruising and swelling are common after fat transfer surgery, particularly in both the donor and recipient areas. This usually resolves within a few weeks but can persist longer in some cases.
  3. Fat Resorption: Not all of the transferred fat cells will survive in their new location. Some degree of fat resorption is normal and expected, but excessive resorption can lead to a loss of volume in the treated area and a top-up maybe required at a later stage.
  4. Asymmetry: Achieving perfect symmetry is an unrealistic expectation, and there’s a risk of asymmetry between the treated areas.
  5. Necrosis: In rare cases, inadequate blood supply to the transferred fat can lead to tissue necrosis (death of tissue cells). This can result in delayed wound healing and potential scarring.
  6. Calcification: Sometimes, calcification can occur within the transferred fat, leading to firmness or lumps in the treated area. Massage and other techniques may be recommended to address this issue and we will discuss this further with you, if this is the case.
  7. Prolonged Recovery: Some patients may experience a longer recovery period than anticipated, particularly if complications arise or if they engage in strenuous activities too soon after surgery.

Recovery:

  1. Initial Healing: After fat transfer surgery, you’ll need to rest and avoid strenuous activities for the first few days. No extreme heat or cold should be applied to the fat transfer areas, and if transferred to the face, minimal facial movement should be used. If you need to ice the upper eyelids without affecting the lower eyelid or cheek, apply the ice pack primarily to the forehead. This positioning helps cool the upper eyelid area indirectly, avoiding direct contact with the lower eyelid or cheek, which may be sensitive following the procedure. When icing, use a clean barrier between the ice and your skin, and apply it in intervals of 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off to avoid prolonged cold exposure.
  2. Follow-Up Visits: Ensure to attend all follow up appointments whether they be in person or via facetime. This will allow us to monitor your progress and ensure proper healing.
  3. Resuming Activities: While you’ll need to avoid vigorous exercise and heavy lifting for several weeks, you can typically return to light activities within a week or two. Our clinical team will discuss this with you further in your follow-up appointments.
  4. Long-Term Results: It’s essential to have realistic expectations about the final results of fat transfer surgery. It may take several months for swelling to fully resolve and for the transferred fat to settle into its new location.

By understanding the potential risks and following your post-operative instructions diligently, you can help minimise complications and achieve results from fat transfer surgery.

Meet DR. Murray

Fat transfer can be used to address volume in various areas of the body, including:

  • The face (e.g., to increase volume in the cheeks or under the eyes)
  • The breasts
  • Hips
  • The buttocks (e.g., for contour adjustments)
  • Areas affected by scars or irregularities

The cost of fat transfer surgery in Perth varies depending on the area treated and the complexity of the procedure. At Absolute Cosmetic, prices start from $2,200, while larger areas, such as the breasts, can range from approximately. $6,600 to $14,990.

Please note: This excludes theatre fees, post-surgical garments, creams, and post-operative medications. An all-inclusive fee will be discussed during your consultation with Dr. Glenn Murray (MED0001196978) (MED0001196978). For further details, please refer to the financial consent form or book a complimentary nurse consultation to discuss payment options.

The results of fat transfer are long-lasting, as the transferred fat that successfully integrates with the surrounding tissue remains in place. However, factors like weight fluctuations and natural aging may affect the results over time. In some cases, a top-up procedure may be recommended to achieve the desired outcome.

You can resume driving 24 hours after Fat Transfer surgery, provided you feel comfortable and are no longer taking prescription pain medication that could impair your ability to drive.

Comprehensive aftercare instructions, including helpful videos, will be provided to guide you through the recovery process. Absolute Cosmetic offers 24/7 aftercare if there are any concerns.
