What is Fat Transfer & Nano fat?
Cheek treatments such as fat transfer and nano fat are treatments designed to add or increase volume in the mid-face. These options can support cheek contour, improve balance, and soften the appearance of hollows. If you are concerned about flat or reduced cheek volume, the most appropriate next step is to book a personalised consultation to discuss all treatment options.
During this appointment, our team will assess your needs and determine a tailored treatment plan. Some treatments can only be discussed during a consultation.
Common Names
Cheek Augmentation, Cheek Volume Treatment
Targeted Area
Cheeks and mid-face volume concerns
Consultation
Fat transfer is a surgical procedure. Before surgery can be booked, you will need a referral from your GP or another medical practitioner, and a consultation with the medical practitioner who will perform your procedure. A cooling-off period of at least seven days applies before surgery can go ahead.
An initial consultation with one of our nurses can help you understand your options and pricing. Some treatment options can only be discussed during a consultation.
Cost
A $90 deposit is required to secure your initial nurse consultation. Your consultation with the medical practitioner who will perform any surgical procedure is booked separately. Please call (08) 9389 9099 or send us a message for more information.

What Concerns Can Be Addressed?
During your consultation, our team will assess your individual features and discuss the most suitable treatment options. Concerns that may be considered include:
-
Reduced cheek definition or mid-face flattening – volume loss in the mid-face can make the cheeks appear less contoured or the face look less supported overall.
-
Imbalance in cheek–jawline harmony – the proportions of the lower and mid-face can affect facial balance; restoring cheek support may improve harmony between features.
-
Hollowing beneath the eyes or temples – age-related changes or genetics can create hollow areas under the eyes (tear troughs) or at the temples.
-
Volume loss in the cheeks – gradual fat and collagen depletion over time
-
Asymmetry or subtle irregularities – differences between the left and right sides of the face, or uneven contours, may be assessed for treatment.
-
Lines and folds around the mouth – changes in the cheeks can contribute to deeper nasolabial folds (smile lines) or marionette lines extending toward the chin.
-
Flattening of cheek contour – some individuals naturally have less projection or structure in the cheeks, which may be explored during consultation.
-
Overall facial balance and profile – cheek structure plays an important role in profile balance when viewed from the front and side.
The most appropriate treatment approach will depend on your anatomy, goals, and medical suitability. Some cheek treatments can only be discussed in a consultation.
Fat Transfer for Volume Restoration
Fat transfer is a surgical option for restoring volume using a patient’s own fat. This approach can be considered for supporting facial features, improving body contours, or addressing areas affected by volume loss. Fat transfer uses your own tissue rather than a manufactured product. It is still a surgical procedure and carries surgical risks, which are outlined below.
This procedure can often be combined with other surgical or non-surgical treatments, depending on the patient’s goals. A thorough consultation is required to determine the most appropriate approach.
Treatment Areas
Concerns may involve the cheeks, as well as areas of the face and body such as the hands, breasts, hips, and body contours.
Longevity
Fat cells that successfully establish a blood supply in the treated area can remain long term. However, a proportion of the transferred fat is usually reabsorbed by the body in the months after treatment, and the amount retained varies from person to person. Some patients may need more than one session to reach their goals. Results will also continue to change with natural ageing and weight changes.
Nano Fat
Nano fat is a highly refined form of fat transfer, where the harvested fat is processed into a very fine consistency. It does not primarily add volume. Instead, it may be considered for skin quality concerns such as fine creases, subtle surface irregularities or some types of scarring. Evidence for nano fat is still developing, so your practitioner will discuss whether it is suitable for you and what outcomes are realistic.
Other Options for Cheek Volume Concerns
Non-surgical options for cheek volume concerns are only discussed during a personalised consultation.
What to Expect at Your Consultation
Personalised Assessment
Your appointment begins with a consultation where your upper face structure and concerns are assessed, and your goals are discussed. This ensures that any recommended treatment options are appropriate and aligned with your natural features. You will also be asked to provide a full medical history so our medical team can determine the safest approach for you.
Preparation
Depending on your individual plan, different methods may be available to address facial volume loss or other concerns. Your practitioner will explain these options during your consultation and outline what you can expect from the process.
Results
Results and recovery will vary depending on the type of treatment performed and your individual response. Your practitioner will explain the likely outcomes, how soon you may notice changes, and what to expect in the days following your procedure.
Aftercare & Support
You will be given tailored aftercare instructions specific to your treatment. Our team also provides follow-up support, and you will have access to assistance if you experience any concerns after your appointment.
How Long Does Fat Transfer to the Cheeks Last?
Some of the transferred fat is usually reabsorbed by the body over the first few months, so the result generally becomes clearer after this period. The fat that remains can be long-lasting, although results will continue to change with natural ageing, weight changes and lifestyle factors. Your practitioner will explain what to expect during your consultation.
What Is Volume Optimisation, and Why Is It Important?
Volume optimisation focuses on achieving balance and proportion in the face. Over time, changes in fat distribution, collagen, and skin elasticity can reduce fullness in areas like the cheeks and temples. Treatments designed to create volume can support contour and definition. Your practitioner will tailor the approach to suit your features and desired aesthetic outcome.
General Risks to Consider
All cosmetic procedures, whether surgical or non-surgical, carry some degree of risk. The specific risks will depend on the type of treatment you undergo, your medical history, and your individual healing response.
Not everyone is suitable for every type of treatment. This is why a personalised consultation is essential. Our experienced medical team will carefully assess your health, discuss potential risks, and outline the safety measures in place before recommending any procedure.
Possible risks may include:
- Bruising, swelling, or discomfort in the treated area
- Temporary redness, sensitivity, or unevenness in healing
- Infection or delayed wound healing
- Scarring or changes in skin texture
- Asymmetry or results that differ from expectations
- Reactions related to anaesthesia or sedation (for surgical procedures such as fat transfer)
- Fat reabsorption, which may mean more than one session is needed
- Lumps, irregularities or overcorrection in the treated area
- Bruising, pain or changes in sensation at the donor site where fat was harvested
- Rare but serious complications, including fat embolism (where fat enters a blood vessel), which in very rare cases can cause vision loss or stroke. Your practitioner will explain these risks and the precautions taken to reduce them
