What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning or Epidermal Levelling is a non-invasive treatment that removes the top layer of dead skin cells, oil and fine vellus hair (commonly known as peach fuzz). This leaves the skin feeling smooth, supple and vibrant and can help with a range of skin concerns.

An added benefit is that it creates a flawless base for makeup, allowing it to glide on more evenly and last longer. It also enhances the absorption of skincare treatments, helping active ingredients to penetrate more effectively for better results.

Dermaplaning Benefits

  • Improves skin texture and tone
  • Allows skincare treatments to penetrate more deeply
  • Creates a smoother surface for flawless makeup application
  • Reduces the appearance of fine lines
  • Helps unclog pores, making them appear smaller
  • Can improve the appearance of acne scarring
  • Suitable for those who cannot tolerate other methods of intense exfoliation (e.g. rosacea sufferers)

Results & Maintenance

Many people notice visible improvements after a single treatment. However, as results are not permanent, treatments are recommended every 3–6 weeks to maintain smooth and radiant skin. The fine vellus hair treated during the procedure will grow back with a blunt edge, but it will not become thicker or darker than before treatment.

Side Effects & Downtime

When performed by a trained Dermal Therapist or Cosmetic Nurse, Dermaplaning is a safe procedure with minimal risk. The skin is kept taut to reduce the chance of nicking. There is no downtime required, but you may notice temporary tightness, redness, warmth, or dryness in the skin, which typically subsides within 24 hours.

Dermaplaning is a deep exfoliation treatment that utilises a surgical blade. The edge of the blade is held at a 45-degree angle to gently scrape the build-up of dirt and oils in and around the skin and vellus hair or peach fuzz.

The vellus hair is completely removed during the process leaving skin ultra-smooth and creating the perfect base for make-up application.

Dermaplaning is a great option for many skin types including those with sensitive skin. It is also a good option for those who have fair hair that is not suitable for IPL or laser hair removal.

Dermaplaning is not a recommended option if you suffer from any of the below:

  • Cystic acne
  • A bleeding or blood clotting disorder
  • Diabetes that is not controlled by diet or medication
  • If you are undergoing cancer treatment including chemotherapy or radiotherapy

Many individuals notice improvements after a single treatment, but results may vary. However, these results are not permanent. It is recommended to have treatment every 3-6 weeks to maintain results.
