Implant Scarring Types, Expectations, and Treatment

Scarring is an important consideration when planning for breast augmentation surgery. This article outlines the common types of incisions, what patients may expect in terms of scar appearance over time, and general approaches to supporting skin recovery after the procedure.

Incision Types and Scar Location

The type and location of a scar depend on the incision used during surgery. At Absolute Cosmetic, the inframammary incision—placed in the fold beneath the breast—is most commonly used. This approach allows direct access to the area, and the resulting scar is typically positioned within the natural fold beneath the breast, where it is generally concealed.

What to Expect During Scar Maturation

Scar appearance may evolve over time and vary between individuals. The general process is:

  1. Initial Phase (0–6 weeks): Scars may appear red, raised, or firm. This is part of the body’s normal response to healing.

  2. Remodelling Phase (6 weeks – 12+ months): Collagen production continues, and the scar may begin to flatten and lighten in colour. Some patients may develop thicker or raised scars, mainly if there is a personal or family history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring. This is a critical time in the scar healing process.

Healing can be influenced by factors such as skin type, medical history, sun exposure, and adherence to aftercare instructions. We recommend strictly following all advice provided by your surgical team.

General Skin Support and Aftercare

While scar formation cannot be completely avoided, there are ways to support the skin post-surgery. These strategies should always be discussed with your practitioner before use:

1. Follow Aftercare Instructions

Your Doctor will provide wound care guidelines, including how to clean and protect the area, avoid strain on the incision site, and when to resume physical activity like “When can I go swimming?”. These instructions are designed to promote optimal healing.

2. Avoid UV Exposure

Protecting the area from sun exposure is important, as UV radiation can lead to pigmentation changes in healing scars. Use protective clothing or broad-spectrum SPF on the chest once approved by your practitioner. This is especially important in Perth, where our UV is strong!

3. Support the Skin Barrier

Maintaining hydration and supporting the skin barrier may assist in the healing process. Once the incision has healed, some patients choose to incorporate topical products into their routine with approval from their Doctor.

Recommended Scar Care Option

At Absolute Cosmetic, we generally recommend the Scar Care Combo Pack as a convenient option for patients wishing to support the appearance of surgical scars during recovery.

This combination pack includes two items often used as part of a scar management plan:

  • Silicone Tape Roll (2cm x 3m): Can be cut to size for tailored use on different incision areas. Silicone dressings may assist in supporting hydration and creating a protective barrier over healing skin.

  • SilDerm Scar Gel (6g): A patented silicone-based gel used in the management of abnormal scars, such as hypertrophic or keloid scarring. The product is transparent, quick-drying, and suitable for all skin types.

You can view this pack and other scar care options in our Scarring Prevention & Management collection. Always speak with your healthcare provider before using any new topical products following surgery.

When to Seek Further Advice

If you notice raised, itchy, or expanding scars or have a personal or family history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring, discuss this with your practitioner. Early management and personalised care may help support a more comfortable outcome. At Absolute Cosmetic, we provide a 24/7 emergency contact number for our surgical patients should any concerns arise during the recovery period.

Scarring after breast augmentation is part of the normal healing process. The extent and visibility of scarring vary between individuals and are influenced by multiple clinical and biological factors. At Absolute Cosmetic, we aim to provide clear, individualised guidance on what to expect and how to support your recovery.
