Breast Implant Checks & Capsulectomy: What You Need to Know

12 Sep 2025

Understanding Breast Implants and the Capsule

When you have a breast implant, your body naturally forms a very thin layer of scar tissue around it. This is called a capsule, and it plays an important role in holding the implant in place. In most women, this capsule remains soft and causes no problems at all. However, in some cases the capsule can become thickened, hard, or contracted. This is a condition known as capsular contracture.

What is a Capsulectomy?

A capsulectomy is a surgical procedure that removes some or all of the capsule surrounding a breast implant.

This may be recommended if:

  • The capsule has become firm or uncomfortable
  • The breast has changed shape due to tightening of the capsule
  • Fluid has collected around the implant and needs to be tested
  • You are replacing or removing implants, particularly older or textured models

There are different approaches:

  • Partial capsulectomy – removing the front portion of the capsule
  • Total capsulectomy – removing the entire capsule
  • En bloc capsulectomy – removing the implant and capsule together (used in certain circumstances)

The choice depends on your medical history, type of implant, and personal goals.

Breast Implant Safety

It is important to note:

  • Breast implants are a well-established treatment when performed by an experienced, qualified cosmetic doctor.
  • Complications like capsular contracture are relatively uncommon.
  • Older, textured implants have been linked to a rare condition called BIA-ALCL (Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma), though the risk remains very low.

At Absolute Cosmetic, we did not use the highest-risk textured implants that were withdrawn from the market. However, we recommend regular monitoring for all women with implants.

Do You Need an Implant Check?

At Absolute Cosmetic, we encourage patients to attend routine breast implant checks. These may include:

  • Ultrasound every 2 years for reassurance and early detection of any changes
  • Clinical examination by a qualified cosmetic doctor
  • Personalised advice about replacement or revision if needed

For most patients, these checks confirm that everything is completely normal. For others, they provide peace of mind and guidance if further care is required.
