“Can I wash my hair?”
The short answer is yes, but there are a few important things to keep in mind to make sure you’re not placing unnecessary strain on the body while it’s recovering.
The Healing Process & Taking Your Time
You can absolutely wash your hair, but we advise being very mindful of your arm movements, especially during the first two weeks after surgery. You’ll want to avoid raising your arms above shoulder height, as this can put stress on the surgical area and interfere with healing.
Here’s how we recommend doing it:

Lean your head forward so you’re not lifting your arms up and over

Ask someone to help you if you feel unsure or uncomfortable

Use slow and gentle movements, don’t rush your movements so that you know what feels comfortable.
Some patients find it helpful to wash their hair over a sink or with assistance to keep everything controlled.
Be Careful in the Shower
A few extra tips to help protect your healing:

Avoid very hot water, which can increase swelling

Keep your breast dressings dry

Make sure water isn’t running over your chest if wounds are still healing
If you’re showering, keep it quick and don’t let the water run directly over your torso. You can even sponge bathe or use a handheld shower to stay comfortable.
Using Comb-Through Shampoo
We know it’s not everyone’s favourite, but comb-through or dry shampoos are an option, especially in the early days when showering feels like too much effort. If you do use one:

Avoid vigorous rubbing or stretching

Be careful not to disturb any dressings
