Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra (DPN) is a common skin condition that presents as multiple, small, dark bumps on the face and neck. While harmless, these raised lesions can become more noticeable with age and may be of cosmetic concern to some individuals.
What Is Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra?
DPN appears as smooth, firm papules that are typically 1–5 mm in diameter. These lesions most often affect people with deeper skin tones, particularly those with Fitzpatrick skin types 4, 5, and 6. The condition is benign, but treatment may be sought for aesthetic reasons or if the lesions catch on clothing or jewellery.
Who Typically Gets DPN?
This condition is more common in individuals of African, Asian, or Indian descent. It often runs in families and can become more prominent with age.
Treatment Options Available at Absolute Cosmetic
At our Applecross clinic, Dr David Syed offers several options for the treatment of DPN:
-
JETT Plasma Pen – This energy-based treatment can target raised lesions with precision, without creating significant heat in the surrounding tissue.
-
Pico Laser – This laser technology targets pigmentation and texture, and may be suitable for some skin types.
-
DOT Laser – Occasionally used for lighter skin types to assist with resurfacing and improving skin texture.
A prescription fading cream is often recommended before treatment, especially in darker skin types, to help reduce the risk of post-treatment pigmentation.
Important Considerations
Patients with deeper skin tones should be aware of the potential risks:
-
Hypopigmentation (light spots)
-
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots)
While many individuals achieve noticeable results, it’s important to understand that side effects are possible, and new lesions may appear over time as part of the natural ageing process.
Recovery
The recovery period can vary based on the treatment method used. Most patients can expect:
-
Scabbing and peeling for 4–10 days
-
Best performed in cooler months when sun exposure is lower
Consultation Required
A face-to-face consultation is required to assess suitability for treatment, as not all lesions may be appropriate for laser or plasma removal. Treatment is typically performed at our Applecross clinic.
Please note: Individual results and recovery experiences may vary. A personalised assessment is essential before proceeding with any treatment.
