Fat Transfer Surgery: What to Know About This Approach to Surgical Contouring

09 May 2025

Fat transfer (also known as autologous fat grafting) is a surgical procedure that uses a patient’s own fat to increase volume in targeted areas of the face and body. This method can be considered by those who are seeking to balance proportions or contour the body without the use of synthetic fillers. At Absolute Cosmetic in Perth, fat transfer is one of several procedures available as part of a tailored treatment plan.

What Is Involved in Fat Transfer?

The procedure generally involves three steps:

  1. Fat Harvesting: Fat is collected from areas where there is excess, such as the abdomen, flanks, or thighs, using liposuction techniques.

  2. Purification: The fat is processed to isolate the healthiest, most viable fat cells.

  3. Reinjection: The processed fat is then carefully reintroduced into areas requiring volume or shaping.

The technique uses the patient’s own tissue, which may appeal to individuals who are not considering synthetic options.

Where Can Fat Be Transferred?

Fat grafting can be used across a range of areas, depending on individual goals and suitability. Commonly treated areas include:

  • Face: Fat transfer may be used to restore volume in the cheeks, jawline, or around the eyes as part of facial balancing or surgical contouring.

  • Breasts: This technique is sometimes used to address volume in the breast area for patients seeking breast augmentation or to correct asymmetry.

  • Hands: Fat grafting to the hands may help restore volume.

  • Buttocks and Hips: Some individuals choose fat transfer to shape these areas as part of a body contouring approach. At Absolute Cosmetic, we only do the hip region due to the high risks associated with the buttocks (BBL).

  • Outer thighs: In selected cases, fat can be redistributed to smooth transitions between areas and contour the silhouette.

Each fat transfer procedure is planned individually to align with the patient’s shape and desired outcome.

Considerations Before Surgery

Fat transfer may be suitable for those who:

  • Have areas with sufficient fat for harvesting

  • Are seeking volume in areas such as the face, breasts, or hands

  • Are in good general health and have realistic expectations

As with any surgical procedure, a detailed consultation is essential. At Absolute Cosmetic, consultations are conducted by experienced practitioners who assess suitability based on each person’s needs and medical history.

How Long Does It Take to See Results from Fat Transfer?

It’s important to understand that not all of the transferred fat will remain in the treated area. After the procedure, some of the fat cells may not survive the transfer process. This is expected and part of how the body responds to fat grafting.

Typically, a portion of the fat (often estimated around 30–50%) may be absorbed by the body in the weeks following surgery.

It can take a few months for the remaining fat to stabilise and for the final results to become more apparent. In some cases, more than one session may be required to achieve the desired volume or contour.

Our team will guide you through this process and discuss realistic outcomes during your consultation.
