What Are Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks (medically referred to as striae) are a common skin condition that affects people of all ages and genders. They are particularly common during pregnancy, puberty, or periods of rapid weight gain or loss. While they’re harmless and extremely common, many individuals look for ways to reduce their appearance for personal or aesthetic reasons.
At Absolute Cosmetic, we are often asked about non-surgical options that may assist in softening the appearance of stretch marks.
In the video below, Dr Murray discusses various non-surgical treatments that are used in-clinic to target different types of stretch marks.
What Causes Stretch Marks?
Stretch marks develop when the skin stretches or shrinks quickly, causing the collagen and elastin fibres in the skin to break. As the skin heals, stretch marks may appear as lines or streaks, typically red, purple, or silver, depending on their age and your skin type.
Common causes include:
-
Pregnancy
-
Rapid weight gain or loss
-
Growth spurts during puberty
-
Hormonal fluctuations
-
Genetics
Non-Surgical Treatments for Stretch Marks
“It’s quite difficult to treat them completely,” says Dr Murray.
“But there are things you can do that may help reduce their appearance.”
Here are some of the non-invasive and minimally invasive treatments used at Absolute Cosmetic:
1. Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) Products
AHAs are naturally occurring acids often used in skincare to encourage skin renewal.
“Using a good alpha hydroxy acid can stimulate collagen and encourage new skin,” says Dr Murray.
These treatments may assist with texture and tone when used consistently as part of a medical-grade skincare routine.
2. Radiofrequency Microneedling (Morpheus8 & Vivace)
Devices like Morpheus8 and Vivace combine microneedling with radiofrequency energy to stimulate collagen and elastin production beneath the skin’s surface.
This approach may be helpful for improving the appearance of both new and older stretch marks.
“It’s important to see someone very experienced in this,” Dr Murray advises.
“You need to be careful of things like infection, so make sure you’re going somewhere reputable.”
We are excited to announce that our new Morpheus8 system is now available at our Applecross clinic.
3. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)
IPL is a light-based treatment that may help reduce pigmentation in newer stretch marks (typically red or purple). It is generally not used for older, white stretch marks but can be effective when colour is still present. Our new IPL Lumecca is an advanced Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) device from the creators of Morpheus8, designed to address concerns such as skin pigmentation, vascular irregularities, and photodamage.
4. Fractional Laser (Pixel or DOT Laser)
Fractional lasers create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, encouraging natural healing and collagen production. These can assist in improving skin texture in stretch-marked areas.
Dr Murray explains:
“For stretch marks that have some pigment in them, you can use IPL and also pixel and DOT laser.”
Can You Prevent Stretch Marks?
While there is no guaranteed way to prevent stretch marks entirely, maintaining consistent skin hydration and supporting skin elasticity during times of change (e.g., pregnancy or weight fluctuations) may help.
General tips:
-
Keep skin moisturised with treatments suited to your skin type
-
Stay hydrated by drinking enough water
-
Avoid rapid weight changes where possible
-
Speak to your doctor about supportive skincare during pregnancy
Are Stretch Mark Treatments Right for You?
The appearance of stretch marks may fade over time, but for those wanting to explore treatment options, Absolute Cosmetic offers individualised consultations. While results vary, a combination of treatment approaches may help to reduce the visibility of stretch marks and support overall skin texture.
“Be realistic,” Dr Murray says.
“There are things you can do, but complete removal is not guaranteed.”
