Exosomes for Skin: What Are They?

19 Sep 2026

Hi, Dr Murray here from Absolute Cosmetic. Today we’re talking about exosomes for skin, because it’s a question I get asked more and more.

What are exosomes?

Exosomes are little packages that are released from cells. They come from cells, and they’re full of DNA, protein and messengers. Think of them as tiny couriers, carrying information from one cell to another.

They’re being studied for how beneficial they can be for the skin, for the hair, and for overall general health. So exosomes are very interesting. We’re still in the early days of understanding exactly what they can and can’t do, but the research interest is increasing.

How are exosomes used?

You can put them on topically, and that’s available here in Australia. Some clinics make their own preparations, and you can also buy exosome products off the shelf.

That’s an important distinction to know before you start looking into this. Not every product labelled “exosomes” is created the same way, or contains what it claims.

What are exosomes used for?

Right now, most of the interest is around the general condition of the skin and rejuvenation. People are looking at exosomes as a topical option to support skin health, alongside the more established treatments we already use in-clinic.

Are exosomes right for you?

This is still an evolving area. If you’re curious about exosomes, the best first step is a proper conversation with your practitioner about what’s actually in a product, how it’s being studied, and whether it makes sense alongside your existing skin routine, rather than instead of it.

FAQ

What are exosomes?

Exosomes are small packages released from cells, containing DNA, protein and messenger molecules that help cells communicate with each other.

Are exosomes the same as stem cells?

No. Exosomes are released by cells rather than being cells themselves, though they’re often derived from cell cultures.

Can exosomes be used on the skin?

Yes, exosomes can be applied topically, and topical exosome products are available in Australia.

Are exosomes proven to work?

Exosomes are still being studied for their benefits to skin, hair and general health. The research is promising but is ongoing.

Are all exosome products the same?

No. Quality and sourcing vary between products, so it’s worth checking what you’re actually being offered.

Where can I find out more about exosomes?
