Threadlift: Silhouette Soft Vs PDO Threads

09 Sep 2024

What is a Thread Lift?

Thread Lift (Non Surgical Facelift)

A Non-Surgical Facelift or Thread Lift, is a minimally invasive procedure to reduce the signs of ageing including but not limited to; lifting skin, tightening the skin, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, stimulating collagen production, and enhancing facial contours.

Threadlifts are increasingly popular for restoring facial contours. The procedure involves no cutting or stitching of the skin layers. Absorbable ultra-fine threads are strategically placed under the skin based on facial vectoring, ensuring minimal downtime. The procedure is made comfortable with the administration of a local anesthetic prior to starting.

Even after the threads dissolve, the collagen that they have stimulated stays behind. This is the important benefit of a thread lift versus filler alone. The results of the thread lift keep on going even after the material is gone.

Dr Syed has substantial experience in Thread Lifts at Absolute Cosmetic Medicine.

Types of Thread Lifts

Silhouette Soft Threads is a globally established treatment, with particular popularity in Europe. Made from Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA), these threads stimulate collagen production and last, on average, 12 months before dissolving. They offer a subtle lift and promote long-term collagen benefits.

PDO Mint Thread Lift originated in Korea and is known for its immediate lifting effect. Made from Polydioxanone (PDO), these threads dissolve within approximately six months and provide a noticeable lift, mainly used in areas such as the nose. While PDO Mint threads offer immediate results, Silhouette Soft threads generally provide longer-lasting collagen stimulation.

The choice between PLLA and PDO Mint threads depends on various factors, including patient suitability and desired outcomes.

Dr. Syed indicates that the longevity and enhanced collagen production associated with Silhouette Soft Threads offset the popularity of the widely used PDO Mint Threadlift. Consequently, he frequently opts for Silhouette Soft Threads in his practice.

Where can PDO Mint and PLLA Silhouette Threadlifts be used to lift?

  • Jawline & Neckline
  • Midface, Cheeks
  • Eyebrows

What’s the key difference between PDO Mint Threadlift vs. PLLA Silhouette Threadlift?

The key difference between PDO Mint and PLLA threads lies in their specific applications:

PDO Mint thread lifts

PDO Mint thread lifts are known for providing immediate and tight soft tissue lifting, making them well-suited for enhancing nasal contours.

PLLA thread lifts

PLLA thread lifts excel in both lifting and adding volume, with their cones compressing soft tissue effectively. The increased collagen production from PLLA threads generally results in smoother, firmer skin, with the effects becoming most noticeable 6 to 12 months after treatment.

Who is suitable for PDO Mint and PLLA Silhouette Threadlifts?

Determining suitability for soft thread treatments is crucial, as results can vary. During the consultation, it may become evident that some patients are looking for results that would require a surgical lift. Patients with mild to moderate skin concerns and realistic expectations generally experience optimal results. Typically, this includes individuals aged 35-50, although favourable results can occasionally be achieved in older patients with good skin quality and minimal skin laxity.

What to expect with PDO Mint and PLLA Silhouette Threadlifts?

Immediately:

Skin is immediately lifted as the threads lift soft tissue to its new position. You may initially look and feel slightly tighter than the final result.

3-6 Months:

Skin rejuvenation peaks, especially with Soft Silhouette threads. You will notice improved skin texture and smoother and firmer skin.

6 Months:

PDO Mint threads have dissolved, but PLLA threads remain for a further 6 months or so.

What are the risks with PDO Mint and PLLA Silhouette Threadlifts?

Depending on the quality and thickness of your skin, you may experience temporary swelling, bruising, and skin changes such as puckering, visibility, or bumps. These effects will resolve with time.

Minor Moderate Rare
Temporary soreness, especially when opening mouth wide Prolonged Skin Dimpling Infection
Temporary Swelling Skin irregularities Nodule formation
Temporary Bruising Thread displacement Nerve injury
Temporary skin dimpling Prolonged aching Salivary gland injury

Are the new threads (PCL and PLLA Silhouette threads) better than PDO Mint threads?

Here are the key details to consider:

PCL (Polycaprolactone) Threads:

These threads generally dissolve after approximately 24 months, potentially offering longer-lasting results. Dy Syed is still considering the effectiveness and benefits of introducing this option to the clinic.

PLLA (Poly-L-Lactic Acid) Threads:

PLLA threads typically dissolve after about 12 months, but the results can persist for up to 2 years, especially in younger, healthier skin that is more capable of producing collagen.

PDO (Polydioxanone) Mint Threads:

PDO Mint threads usually dissolve within 2 to 5 months. While they provide a shorter window for collagen production compared to PCL and PLLA threads, they often offer a more immediate lift.

Regardless of the thread type chosen, they can offer subtle but noticeable refinement in early signs of aging. Given the significant investment in your appearance, a comprehensive assessment and consultation are crucial for making an informed decision. Additionally, selecting an experienced practitioner is essential to achieve the best outcomes.
